Mansfield Town are delighted to announce the signing of midfielder Anthony Hartigan on a two-year contract.

As Hartigan is under 24-years-old, the club has agreed a compensation package with AFC Wimbledon, his previous club.

The 22-year-old has enjoyed a successful career to date with the Dons, after joining them at the age of 14.

He quickly established himself as one of the club’s brightest young prospects and signed his first professional contract on his 17th birthday.

Hartigan made his debut in an EFL Cup match to Brentford in August 2017.

In April 2018, he was named the LFE Apprentice of the Year award for League One at the EFL Awards ceremony in London.

The Londoner also has experience in League Two, having enjoyed a brief loan spell at Newport County in 2020-21.

Hartigan has made 152 appearances for Wimbledon, including 42 last term and seven assists in League One.

On 05 July 2022 he decided to leave the club following the expiry of his contract.

“Anthony is a young midfielder with a lot of league games under his belt for his age,” said manager Nigel Clough.

“He’s somebody who we’ve watched for some timeand he’ll bring something different to the squad.

“He’s a central midfield player, with a very good delivery into the penalty area from set-plays.

“We think he has real potential to go on and play at a higher level in the future and at 22, he complements the experience we have in the squad.

“We’re grateful to the owners who, along with David [Sharpe, chief executive], have worked hard on the deal and sanction the fee.”

Anthony Hartigan talks to iFollow Stags

Q: Why did you come here?
"The staff worked hard and showed a really keen interest to get me in. I want to be part of a successful team.

"It was a difficult decision to leave AFC Wimbledon. But I needed a change, a different working environment. A different test for myself.

"I want to get back to my old self and hit the levels I know I'm capable of.

"We had a few good cup runs (at AFC Wimbledon), and playing at Wembley against Tottenham was a highlight.

"The relegation last year was the lowest point in my career, something I never want to happen again.

"Last season was a stop-start season for me. Up to Christmas was really good, I had good performances. But we couldn't seem to get a win after Christmas. I had a few injuries after Christmas and it was stop-start for me.

"I see myself as someone who likes to be creative, get on the ball, work hard.

"I played quite deep in midfield last season. I can play in the holding role, but I can also see myself getting forward and using my energy to get up and down the pitch.

"I take massive pride in my set pieces, it's a big part of my game. I try to practice and practice. We scored from a load of free kicks last year. Also from a direct shooting position as well.

"I've been training with a Strength & Conditioning coach, one of my friends called No (?spelling), I've been training with him 5 times per week.

"You can only do so much training by yourself but I feel that I'm at a good place physically to get straight involved."

Q: What's your aim here?
"To get promoted."

EXCLUSIVE: MANSFIELD TOWN IN ADVANCED TALKS TO SIGN RECENTLY DEPARTED AFC WIMBLEDON PLAYER
Football League World, 3 August 2022, By Alfie Burns

Mansfield Town are in advanced talks to sign Anthony Hartigan on a free transfer, sources have told Football League World.

Hartigan made 152 appearances for AFC Wimbledon between 2017 and 2022, as well as having a brief stint on loan with Newport County.

However, the midfielder saw his deal at Plough Lane come to an end earlier in the summer and his departure was confirmed in early July after he knocked back the offer of a new contract.

Football League World understands that Mansfield are now in advanced talks to take the 22-year-old to Field Mill to bolster Nigel Clough’s squad for the League Two season.

Hartigan made 34 appearances last season in League One for Wimbledon, scoring once and registering a further five assists.

The potential arrival of the midfielder in Mansfield will be a further boost to Clough’s hopes of his side bouncing back following play-off heartbreak at Wembley last season, as they lost out 3-0 to Port Vale in the League Two play-off final.

Mansfield lost 2-0 to Salford City on the opening day of the season last weekend.

AFC Wimbledon midfielder Anthony Hartigan to leave club after rejecting new contract following relegation

AFC Wimbledon midfielder Anthony Hartigan is set to leave the club after rejecting the offer of a new contract.

The 22-year-old will become a free agent this summer and has opted to walk away after the club’s relegation from League One.

Blackpool, Rotherham and Preston are all tracking the player, who was also linked with Bolton earlier in the season.

Wimbledon were keen to keep hold of Hartigan, who has made 152 first team appearances - including 42 this term.

Hartigan’s current deal ends on June 30, when he will be free to move.

Because he is under 24, Wimbledon will be entitled to fee, which may have to be set by tribunal if a figure cannot be agreed with whatever club he eventually moves to.

Wimbledon were relegated from League One on the final day of the season last Saturday.

They finished 23rd in the table following a winless league run stretching back to early December.
