Mansfield Town were beaten 3-2 at Tranmere Rovers last night to end an unbeaten run of 14 matches, and miss the chance of leaping back into the top 3. The Stags twice fought back from a goal down, with goals in stoppage time at the end of the first half, and then in stoppage time at the end of the second half, but were finally beaten by a winner from Tranmere deeper into stoppage time in extraordinary drama. The Stags were far from at their best and Tranmere looked a good side. Tranmere are indeed very strong at home, and they showed why they had won 12 games at home already this season, more than any other side in the league, apart from the Stags who have also won 12. Now they do have the best home record, roared on by their vociferous fans. Tranmere were also determined to halt a run of form of 4 defeats in 5 games, all 4 of those defeats away from home.
In my opinion, Tranmere deserved the win. Mansfield played well at times but in only in short spells, at the end of each half, and not enough to warrant the points, but it was very disappointing to be beaten having already equalised in stoppage time.

Substitute Elliott Nevitt was Tranmere's hero as his two late strikes secured a win against League Two play-off-chasing rivals Mansfield.

Nevitt bagged the winner deep into stoppage time to consign Mansfield to a first defeat in 15 games, dating back to November.

Rovers went ahead inside five minutes when skipper Peter Clarke powered home a header from six yards after Calum MacDonald had nodded the ball back into the danger zone.

Mansfield's Newcastle loanee Matty Longstaff saw an effort blocked, while at the other end Tom Davies was similarly denied.

The visitors produced a terrific one-touch move before Rhys Oates was denied from 12 yards by a smart save from Joe Murphy.

Oates was again thwarted by Murphy, before the visitors levelled seconds before the break when Longstaff slammed home Stephen McLaughlin's cross from a tight angle.

Just before the hour mark Rovers' Josh McPake fired an angled strike against a post.

Nevitt made it 2-1 to Rovers when he converted Lewis Warrington's throughball, before Ollie Hawkins headed home Jamie Murphy's corner in the second minute of time added on to level the scores.

But, not to be denied, Nevitt then drove superbly into the top corner to win the game three minutes later.

Mansfield Town suffer first defeat of 2022 after injury-time drama at Tranmere Rovers
chad.co.uk, Friday 11th March 2022

Mansfield Town’s brilliant unbeaten run is over as they were sunk by play-off-chasing rivals Tranmere.

Supersub Elliott Nevitt’s two late goals consigned the Stags to a first defeat since November in what was a bruising encounter at Prenton Park.

Stags boss Nigel Clough had made just the single alteration to his starting line-up following the victory over Exeter seven days earlier.

The tweak came up top, with Ollie Hawkins coming straight back following his suspension, with Jordan Bowery dropping to the bench.

Rovers were clearly fired up straight from the kick-off, and they stormed ahead inside five minutes.

Calum MacDonald nodded the ball into the danger zone, and unmarked skipper Peter Clarke took advantage of a static-looking Stags defence as he gleefully headed home from six yards.

A feisty clash saw a number of crunching tackles from both sides, with Lucas Akins being forced off early for the visitors.

Matty Longstaff saw a shot blocked, while bang on the half-hour mark Jamie Murphy found space in the Rovers box before seeing a low drive deflected off target.

Deep into first-half added time the Stags levelled when Longstaff charged in to convert Stephen McLaughlin’s clipped cross from the tightest of angles.

Shortly after the restart Rovers went close again when Paul Glatzel’s close-range strike flicked off Stags defender Elliott Hewitt before fizzing inches over the top.

Josh McPake then struck a post with a shot from an acute angle.

Rovers sub Josh Hawkes fired wide from 20 yards as the hosts were now on top, but the Stags’ back line was also looking comfortable as the final 20 minutes approached.

However, Nevitt made it 2-1 in the 76th minute when he converted Lewis Warrington’s precise through-ball.

Ollie Hawkins headed home Murphy’s corner in the 92nd minute as the Stags levelled it again, before Nevitt smashed clinically into the top corner three minutes later.

Tranmere Rovers picked up a dramatic victory over Mansfield Town on Friday night at Prenton Park.

An early Peter Clarke header followed by an Elliott Nevitt brace was enough to see off an inform Stags side.

It was the dream start for Rovers when after just 5 minutes, a well rehearsed corner routine was met by Calum MacDonald who nodded it into the path of Peter Clarke and the captain was on hand to divert the ball into the back of the net.

With the roar of the SWA behind them, Tranmere continued to attack. This time, Kieron Morris’ cross found it’s way to Paul Glatzel in the box but he just about couldn’t pull the trigger.

The visitors were restricted to chances with their first sight of goal coming from a back post corner. Jamie Murphy turned the ball back towards goal but a sea of white shirts blocked the effort.

Deep into the injury time, Mansfield forced an equaliser. McLaughlin stood a cross up to the back post where an unmarked Longstaff squeezed the ball in from a tight angle despite the best efforts of Joe Murphy.

Rovers started the second half really brightly and should have gone back in front. Glatzel jinked left and right in the box before eventually releasing his shot from close range but it was deflected over.

On the hour mark, McPake struck the woodwork. He found space on the right and got into the box before seeing his powerful effort canon back off the near post.

With 15 minutes of normal time remaining, substitute Elliott Nevitt put the home side back in front. He broke the offside trap after being played through by Lewis Warrington and the striker slotted cooly beneath Bishop.

Just as the board went up for eight minutes of injury time, The Stags grabbed an equaliser against the run of play. Oli Hawkins leapt highest from a corner to power a head home to claim what looked like a point for the visitors.

Another twist was yet to come as Nevitt once again sent the SWA into raptures. He twisted and turned inside the box and fired into the far corner as the clock hit 96 minutes.

Rovers held on for a much needed three points to put them back to third place in Sky Bet League Two

11 CLEARANCES, 5 AERIAL DUELS - THIS TRANMERE ROVERS MAN WAS KEY IN THE WIN OVER MANSFIELD TOWN
the72.co.uk, by Ollie Chesters

Tranmere Rovers continued their promotion push yesterday with a well fought 3-2 win against Mansfield Town in League Two.

The win saw Rovers move up to 3rd in the League Two table, ending a winless run of five games and placing the Whites back into the fight for automatic promotion after coming into this weekend in 6th.

A lot can be said about striker Elliott Nevitt’s performance off the bench, scoring two goals, including a 95th minute winner and changing the game after coming on for Paul Glatzel.

Whilst the former non-league star put on a show at Prenton Park, other players certainly put in their shift to contribute to the win. The main contributor being 40-year-old Peter Clarke.

What the stats say...

Clarke has been in a Rovers shirt for the best part of two seasons now, and has become a favourite among many Tranmere fans.

The powerful centre-back signed for Rovers in January of 2020 and has earned the right to the captains’ armband leading the Whites’ formidable defence this season.

According to WhoScored the centre-back has been Rovers’ best performer this season and has played every league fixture.

Yesterday Clarke put up some stunning stats though. He played next to his regular centre-back partner Tom Davies and put in a really good game at the heart of defence.

Clarke cleared the ball from danger a staggering 11 times in the game - which is his third highest number of clearances in a game all season. On top of that the 40-year-old defender also won five aerials, including an all important first goal that got Rovers of the mark in the first place.

Although Clarke didn’t manage a single tackle in the game he did manage to intercept three passes, which ties his record for the season.

Clarke was aided by a great performance from left-back Callum MacDonald who made five tackles in the match and had three blocks.
