We are delighted to announce the signing of former Birmingham City left-back Ryan Burke on a one-year deal.

Burke joined Birmingham from St. Patrick’s Athletic as a 16-year-old, making his Championship debut in July 2020.

The 20-year-old was a member of the Blues’ under-18 side that reached the FA Youth Cup semi-final in the 2017/18 season, and made his debut for the under-23 side a day after his 17th birthday.

When the Sky Bet Championship resumed in 2019/20, following its suspension due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Burke was amongst the substitutes for the Blues’ first match against West Bromwich Albion.

The defender was to make his Football League debut away at Stoke City in July, coming off the bench in the second-half.

In September 2020, Burke joined National League side Yeovil Town until January 2021, making four outings during his time at Huish Park.

The young full-back has also represented Ireland at under-15 and under-16 levels.

“We needed someone to push Stephen McLaughlin, who will probably start out as our first choice left-back,” said Stags’ boss Nigel Clough.

“We’ve seen Ryan play in Birmingham’s under-23s several time last season and were impressed.

“He’s aggressive and has a lovely left foot. I’ve seen him play in the left of a back-three, a left wing-back and as an orthodox left-back. He’s equipped himself well in each position.”

Ryan Burke told iFollow Stags:
"Coming towards the end of last season, my coach in Birmingham told me Mansfield are interested in me for next season. They weren't sure if it was going to be a permanent move or a loan move because my contract hadn't been decided yet.
"As soon as I heard it, I was buzzing.
"Where I'm at in my career, I want to be playing men's football.
"I made my debut for Birmingham in the Championship during the lockdown period. I went out on loan to Yeovil last season for 6 months. I enjoyed my time there as well.
"I'm looking to knuckle down now and play men's football regularly.
"In Ireland I started with local team Belgrave. I moved on to Crumlin. Then I was at St Josephs, and then I was at St Pats.
"I had a great time in Ireland, I won a lot of trophies.
"I'm a left back. I can play left wing-back as well. Preferably left back.
"I like to get on the ball. I'm a defender first and foremost. But I love getting forward and creating chances and popping up with the odd goal or two.
"My early goal is to get into the team as soon as possible."

PLAYER RELEASED BY BIRMINGHAM CITY THIS SUMMER JOINS LEAGUE TWO SIDE

Birmingham City’s recently released defender Ryan Burke has completed a move to Mansfield Town, it has been confirmed.

Birmingham City confirmed earlier this summer that young defender Ryan Burke would be one of many players departing the club this summer.

The Blues opted against renewing the youngster’s terms upon the climax of his deal, opening the door for him to move on.

Now, ahead of the 2021/22 campaign, it has been announced that Burke has joined a new club.

League Two side Mansfield Town have moved to snap up the Irishman on a free transfer. The Stags confirmed the deal on Friday morning as manager Nigel Clough continues his summer recruitment drive.

Burke is signing number seven for Mansfield, who will be determined to improve on last season’s 16th place finish.

He follows George Shelvey (loan), Oli Hawkins, Stephen Quinn, Elliott Hewitt, Nathan Bishop (loan) and Danny Johnson through the doors at Field Mill.

Having made one senior appearance in his time with Birmingham City, Burke will be hoping to press on with his breakthrough into first-team football under Clough’s management.

With the Blues, Burke spent most of his time playing for the youth sides after joining from St. Pats.

The 20-year-old also spent time out on loan, linking up with Yeovil Town in January this year. With the Glovers, Burke made five appearances, playing at centre-back and defensive midfield as well as left-back.
