Mansfield Town is pleased to announce the signing of former Derby County Academy defender Jaden Charles on a contract which runs until the end of the season.

The left full-back, 19, had previously been schooled in the Rams’ youth system for ten years.

Stags’ boss Nigel Clough said: “Jaden was initially training with our Academy to get fit and then stepped up to the first team sessions in the last few weeks.

REPUBLIC OF IRELAND underage international Jaden Charles has signed for Mansfield Town on an initial deal that will run until the end of the season.

The 19-year-old left-back makes the move to the League Two club after spending 10 years on the books at Derby County.

He’s the son of former England defender Gary Charles, who was a team-mate of Mansfield manager Nigel Clough at Nottingham Forest.

“Jaden was initially training with our Academy to get fit and then stepped up to the first-team sessions in the last few weeks,” said Clough. “We’ll have a look at him over the coming weeks with a view to next season.”

Charles played alongside current Ireland senior international Jason Knight during his time in the academy at Derby, but he was unable to make a first-team breakthrough.

Although born in England, he’s also eligible to represent Ireland and did so at U18 level during Andy Reid’s reign as manager in 2019.

The sizeable Irish contingent at Mansfield already includes Stephen Quinn, Harry Charsley, Ryan Sweeney, Corey O’Keeffe, James Clarke, Stephen McLaughlin and Aaron O’Driscoll (on loan at Longford Town).

The agency firm representing young defender Jaden Charles says the young left-back decided to chose to pursue his career elsewhere.

The Rams yesterday released an update on their academy players and said that Charles had been released.

But Tornado Sports Management, who represent the full-back, said the player had made the decision himself to leave Pride Park.

In a Tweet today, they said: "Would just like to confirm that Jaden Charles wasn’t released.

"He has chosen to pursue his career elsewhere.

"Thank you to Derby County FC for all their work with Jaden over the past 10 years."

Charles played for the Rams in the UEFA Youth League and caught the eye back in February when he scored a stunning free-kick in a game against Newcastle United.

It was ranked as one of the best goals of February, but he lost out on the goal of the month award to Tra Lucas of Luton Town.
