EARLY HUTCHINSON GOAL WINS IT FOR STAGS
Martin Shaw and Simon Chamberlain at the One Call Stadium A goal after 92 seconds by Ben Hutchinson was enough to earn the points for Mansfield Town in an entertaining and hard fought game against Southport. Mansfield were fortunate when Southport were denied a penalty as Shaun Whalley went over Lee Beevers’ outstretched leg on 11 minutes but the referee booked Whalley for simulation. Review of the match DVD showed it should have been a penalty. The Stags created chances for Nick Wright, Lindon Meikle and Jake Speight but were indebted to some dogged defending at the other end, with John Dempster in fine form including some crucial blocks. Mansfield now head for an FA Cup replay on Tuesday at Beaconsfield SYCOB’s ground against Slough Town, before heading back to Field Mill to take on Luton in a game which has been moved again, this time to Sunday lunchtime, much to the annoyance of Paul Cox. The Stags have the joint best home record in the division again, alongside Newport. Mansfield were unchanged from the team that drew at Nuneaton, with top scorers Jake Speight and Matt Green on the bench. Southport were without Godfrey Poku, on loan from Mansfield, who was sent off in Southport’s last game but who would not have been able to play anyway under the terms of the loan. The Stags were ahead on 92 seconds. Meikle did very well to win the ball in his own half. In a good move, Wright and Briscoe exchanged passes before Wright crossed the ball from the right into the middle and Hutchinson had time to fire home from 3 yards. On 3 minutes, a Southport player went down in the box but it was a bit soft. Whalley could not control a ball over the top on 4 minutes and Redmond was able to collect. Wright got a shot on target on 6 minutes, and Southport keeper McMillan saved comfortably low down. A key moment in the game came on 11 minutes. Shaun Whalley broke into the Stags box on the right. Beevers left out a trailing leg which Whalley went over. The referee decided it was a dive by Whalley and booked him but review of the match DVD showed that Beevers’ trailing leg made contact with him and not with the ball, and it should have been a penalty. After the game, Southport boss Liam Watson asked me to make sure that the referee got a copy of the match DVD! A good break by Meikle on 17 minutes and he got the ball to Wright on the left. Wright cut inside and shot but his effort nearly hit the right corner flag. Whalley sent a free kick over the bar from 22 yards on 21 minutes. Southport had another claim for a penalty on 27 minutes as Tames may have got a nudge in the box and sent a header just wide. A good move from the Stags on the half hour ended with Hutchinson having a shot deflected over the bar. Another good move a minute later, as Clements crossed from the right, Wright headed it on, and Howell just missed it, when any sort of touch might have taken it in. A good break by Wright on 34 minutes, and his shot was high towards the corner of the net but the keeper made a routine save. On 35 minutes, another good move, involving Briscoe, and Beevers curled a shot over the bar from the edge of the box. It was a good passage of play for the Stags who were playing with composure. On 44 minutes, two good challenges by Dempster and Clements to thwart Southport. Mansfield deserved to be in front at the break, with some good moves forward, while Southport were also playing some good football. Half time 1-0 On 47 minutes, Southport striker Tames miscontrolled the ball and it ran through to Redmond. On 48 minutes Clements crossed and Wright headed wide but Wright was offside anyway. Sutton crossed straight to the keeper from a great position on 50 minutes with players queuing up in the six yard box. Moments later, a free kick from Clements, and Howell got a header goalwards but it was straight at the keeper. Tames was through on the left on 51 minutes, but again miscontrolled and couldn’t get in a shot. A Southport free kick was whipped in on 53 minutes and a header from former Stag Simon Grand flashed just wide as Redmond would have had no chance stopping it. Back at the other end, a minute later Briscoe made space for himself but the angle was too tight and he shot into the side netting. Clements, having already been booked, committed a foul on 61 minutes but escaped a second yellow and Moogan sent the free kick over the bar. Three minutes later, Clements got another warning from the referee after another foul. Speight replaced Wright on 65 minutes. A minute later Meikle spotted the keeper off his line but lobbed over the bar. Clements was replaced by Murray on 67 minutes, clearly to prevent a second yellow for Clements. A great block by Dempster on 69minutes, with Southport claiming a handball in the box. On 79 minutes, a Southport free kick went wide after coming off a Southport player last after Dempster headed the ball backwards. Hutchinson headed over following a Briscoe free kick on 82 minutes. Good play from Meikle on 85 minutes gave Howell a chance but his first touch was poor and ran through to the keeper. On 86 minutes, a corner from Hutchinson was met by Geohaghon but it was only off the top of his head and well wide. A really good run from Speight on 89 minutes opened the defence up but he fired wide. On 90 minutes, Briscoe nearly picked up on a loose back pass. Four minutes of time was added on. In the third of those, Briscoe had a shot blocked. Moments later, Sutton was upended with his legs taken away, and astonishingly the ref awarded Southport a free kick halfway inside the Stags half. Southport sent their keeper forward but the Stags were able to clear and the referee blew the final whistle. The players left the pitch to warm applause. The Stags deserved the win to give a much needed confidence boost, ahead of the FA Cup replay. Man of the match: John Dempster |

Redmond 6 Clean sheet and has now conceded only one goal in 270 minutes. Didn’t have to make any good saves. Lacked communication with his defenders on more than one occasion and got away with it.
Sutton 7 Defended well. Poor going forward. Dempster 8 Pick of the defence, with some superb blocks. Geohaghon 7 Solid at the back. Didn’t create any danger at the other end. Beevers 6.5 Defended well, apart from getting lucky when he left a leg out which Whalley went over but the referee decided it was a dive. Briscoe 6 Didn’t create much. Howell 7 Did well in the centre of the park and won quite a few headers. Clements 7 Decent game. Had to be subbed after a yellow card followed by two warnings for fouls. Meikle 7 Excellent challenge to win the ball in the build-up to the goal. Good play to set up Wright for a wayward shot. Not at his best but still had a decent game. Hutchinson 7 His first goal of the season was crucial, as he scored from close range. Good game, and was the fans text vote man of the match. Wright 7 Had a decent game. Missed a good chance when his shot nearly hit the corner flag. |

Declan Ford 5 Some poor decisions, including not giving Southport the penalty, and a ridiculous foul against Sutton in the 94th minute which gifted the visitors a last-gasp opportunity to equalise.
