STAGS GIFT THE POINTS TO OUT-OF-FORM GRIMSBY

Martin Shaw at Field Mill

Grimsby Town, who were in a terrible run of form, were gifted three points at Field Mill on Tuesday night through some awful hesitant defending by Mansfield and a goalkeeping error by David Grof that was punished. Going forward, the Stags lacked invention and got steadily worse after a reasonable opening half hour.

There was still no start for Neil Collett who surely needs minutes on the pitch before Wembley, while Louis Briscoe was still not rested. Grimsby included former Stags Lee Peacock and Scott Garner.

On 5 minutes, Paul Connor shot at the keeper from the edge of the box. A good chance for the Stags on 11 minutes, with a great run down the right from Higginson and his cross was perfect for Briscoe who didn’t need to break his stride and swept the ball goalwards, but it was well saved by Arthur.

On 23 minutes, a Lee Peacock cross was well cut out by Preece. A minute later, a terrific save from Grof as Leary broke away from Stonehouse, and was through 1-on-1, but Grof saved with his legs. Good play from Murray, set Briscoe off down the right, Briscoe showed great pace to get to the byeline and his crossed was cleared. Higginson claimed a penalty on the half hour, telling the linesman that his shirt was pulled, but the ref correctly waved his appeal away. Mistakes in the Stags back-line on 34 minutes allowed Peacock all the time in the world, and he sidefooted wide from 10 yards.

Grimsby took the lead on 44 minutes. Connell found Thanoj on the left wing, and his cross sailed over Grof and allowed Coulson to head home from inside the six yard box.

A good move from the Stags on 45 minutes and Briscoe’s powerful low shot was saved. A minute into stoppage time, Grof saved from a low shot that was possibly going wide.

Half time 0-1

On 48 minutes, a half chance for the Stags as Higginson’s shot was blocked at the edge of the box. A long throw from Grimsby on 56 minutes and Connell headed just over. On 58 minutes, the Stags had a good chance to equalise. Grof’s long kick out was headed down by Briscoe to Murray, who did well to find Higginson, and Higginson had time to set himself, before firing towards the right corner of the net, but Arthur pulled off a great save. From the resulting corner, Briscoe headed well wide.

Medley replaced Higginson on 65 minutes. On 68 minutes, Peacock headed wide from a free kick.

On 78 minutes, Medley put Adam Smith in but Smith’s shot from a tight angle was blocked. A minute later, Nix’s free kick from 20 yards was straight at the keeper.

Poor play from Stonehouse and then from Foster on 81 minutes, allowed Leary through for a free shot at goal from the edge of the box, but Grof dived away to his right to make a fine save. From the resulting corner, the ball sailed over Grof and I'Anson headed in on his debut.

Within seconds it was nearly 3-0 as Connell was through on goal, but his shot hit the right post. A minute later, Peacock had time in the box but chipped over.

A chance for a Stags consolation on 90+1 minutes, when following a good move, Briscoe’s shot was nearer the corner flag than the goal.

Man of the Match: Conor Higginson

Line Up:
Grof 5 Bad mistakes for the 2 goals. Made some good saves as well.
Silk 5 Poor game.
Foster 6 Did ok.
Preece 6 Reasonable game alongside Foster.
Stonehouse 5 Poor. After two good games, he couldn't come up with the consistency of a third good game.
Briscoe 6 Worked hard and a couple of good efforts. Really should have been rested before now. Just pray he doesn't pick up an injury through fatigue.
Murray 6.5 The pick of the midfield. Tried to get things moving.
Nix 5.5 Gave the ball away in dangerous positions too often.
Smith 6 Got into a few good positions with some trickery, but no end product with crossing or shooting.
Connor 6 Worked very hard, and had one shot.
Higginson 6.5 A good cross for Briscoe's first half chance, and good effort in the second half.
