Mansfield Town faced Forest Green Rovers in the FA Cup 1st round reply this evening with Forest Green progressing to round 2.

1st half

From a Forest Green view this game should have been dead and buried well before half time, they had enough opportunities to score 4 or 5 goals, only thanks to the brilliant Marriott in the Stags goal, the crossbar and the linesman for disallowing what seemed a perfectly good goal for offside. Stags in contrast had very little in front of goal largely due the ineffective Sturrock and the lack of service from the midfield or defensive long punts up field. We did have the ball in the net, but Speight had been flagged offside long before he had the ball in the back of the net.
Yet the Stags found themselves only 1-0 down at half time, the goal coming from Conal Platt with a brilliant free kick from 20 odd yards, even though the referee, who was poor throughout the game, got the free kick wrong as it was never a foul, Forest Green deserved their 1-0 lead at half time.

2nd Half

Whatever David Holdsworth said to the Mansfield boys at half time seemed to do the trick, Stags came out and looked a totally different team to the 1st half, we pressed, battled and created numerous chances to get back level, but it took till the 71st minute when the sponsors man of match Briscoe had a cross blocked which came to Williams on the edge of the box to swing it in, to be met by Perry to nod it in from close range.
This was just the start of a lot of pressure and for the next 10 minutes, Forest Green never looked like getting out of their own half, but we didn’t get any luck in front of goal and all our chances went begging.
Just when we were all looking forward to a extra time, the Stags got a free kick and going for the win committed suicide, the free kick which was poor was cleared out, the defence never dealt with the ball and it found its way into the box and into the back of the net. This sent the 41 Forest Green fans wild and our fans headed to the exits.
This is how it stayed and the final whistle was greeted with boo’s from the Mansfield faithful.
