SPRIGHTLY SPEIGHT INSPIRES STAGS TO SLAUGHTER
Martin Shaw and Neil Shaw at Field Mill Mansfield turned in another good display to dispatch Barrow 4-1 at Field Mill on Tuesday night. With the game tied at 1-1 after a bad mistake by Somner gifted Barrow an equaliser, manager David Holdsworth brought on Jake Speight and Daryl Clare. Speight scored with his second touch, having the won the ball with his first touch! Then Clare scored a brace of penalties. Thus Holdsworth deserves much credit for this victory. Incidentally, it was the first time since the start of the 1964-65 season that the Stags had scored four goals in each of the first two home games (thanks to Svante Bernhard for pointing out this fact via a text message a few minutes after the final whistle). The Stags were unchanged from the win at Salisbury. Clare was not 100% fit according to Holdsworth, so wasn’t considered for the starting eleven, but was on the bench. Barrow included the grey haired centre-half Paul Jones involved in such controversy at Field Mill last season, and Paul Bolland signed from Cambridge alongside him in central defence. It was a lovely evening at Field Mill, in front of another good crowd. On 2 minutes, Briscoe cut in from the right, but his left foot shot was easy for the keeper. On 9 minutes, Williams’ free kick to the far post was headed down by Perry but went across the goal with no-one able to get on the end of it. The Stags appealed for a penalty or a corner on 9 minutes but got neither as Perry seemed to be held down and the Barrow cleared. On 22 minutes, a Stags free kick reached Briscoe who chipped in a cross but it went wide. The Stags were in front on 27 minutes. Williams crossed from the left, hard and low, Boyd blocked it, but it came out to Duffy who side-footed home from inside the box. Duffy celebrated by rugby-tackling Sammy the Stags down by the tunnel Briscoe was through on goal on 34 minutes but the keeper did well to force Briscoe wide and the chance was gone. Then a great run by Briscoe on 43 minutes as he was being fouled all the way, but his cross was cleared. A minute into stoppage time Williams tried a chip from 20 yards which was just over. A minute later, Barrow’s Boyd tried his luck from 35 yards but it was straight at Marriott. A good half from the Stags, well worth the one goal lead. Half time 1-0 The Stags started the second half nervously and on 46 minutes, a poor back pass from Briscoe put Marriott in trouble but the keeper just got there to clear. It was a sign of things to come later. On 48 minutes, a great block by Luke Jones from the Barrow number 6’s close range shot. The Stags gradually got their game together in the second half and on 54 minutes a good spell of passing and pressure ended with Duffy heading over the bar. Then on 56 minutes, Briscoe squared to Duffy whose side-foot shot looked like being a repeat of his first half goal, but was well saved by the keeper, albeit the shot was straight at him. Then the Stags claimed for a penalty as a ball bounced up in the penalty area. On 57 minutes, a good opportunity for the Stags as Kyle Perry was through on the left, but he fired in a wild shot wide of the left post. Then on 60, a good run by Briscoe, but he lost it in the box. On 61 minutes, the Stags gifted Barrow an equaliser. Somner tried a backpass to Marriott but left it short. Logan and Marriott converged on the ball outside the box. Marriott won it with a sliding tackle, but the ball only reached Walker who chipped into the empty net from 25 yards. It had some similarities to the shot by Tubbs in stoppage time at Salisbury on Saturday where we were so grateful that Tubbs missed the target. A good shot from 20 yards by Logan on 63 minutes was straight at Marriott. Holdsworth made a double change on 64 as Clare and Speight replaced Briscoe and Duffy. Speight was told by the ref to change his shorts. As Speight was waved back on, he ran towards the D of the penalty area, nicked the ball past a defender following Perry's challenge, carried on running and belted a shot with the outside of his right boot just inside the left post. What a fantastic finish! On 75 minutes, Williams crossed from the left but it was a fraction too high for Perry, who could only head over. A minute later, Perry won the Stags a penalty. Perry tried to shield the ball from Bolland inside the box with his back to goal, Bolland seemed to hold Perry and eventually the two players dropped to the ground. The ref immediately awarded a penalty and gave Bolland a second yellow card. After a long break while Bolland walked the length of the pitch and then the ref re-placed the ball on the spot, super-cool Daryl Clare buried the kick to make it 3-1. It was 4-1 on the stroke of 90 minutes. Williams found Clare on the angle of the penalty area on the right and was clearly tripped by Paul Jones. Clare was going nowhere but there was no doubt about the foul. Clare stepped up again and again Buried the penalty. It was nearly five on 90+2 minutes as a cross from the right was skewed on to the roof of his own net by a Barrow defender. So the game ended with Stags fans on their feet again. Another great win. It has to be admitted that Barrow were not as good opposition as Crawley, Salisbury and of course Luton, and were a pretty dirty outfit, having six players booked or sent off. But you have to beat the side in front of you. More of the same against Ebbsfleet on Saturday please. Come on Mansfield! Man of the Match: Jake Speight. Substitute who changed the game. |
