Season 07/08 Stagsnet Match Report

1 - 3

 Robertson 2, Lowry 45, Lester 90+3.
Attendance: 4548 (1818 from Chesterfield)
Date: 15 September 2007

Chesterfield won the big local derby at Field Mill on Saturday lunchtime. Chesterfield were the better side in the first half and deserved to be ahead at half time, but the Stags were much better in the second half and the whole game turned on a decision by referee Kevin Friend not to send off keeper Barry Roche when Michael Boulding went around him and was brought down as he was about to fire into an empty net. The Spireites had no reserve keeper on the bench. The Stags were unable to score despite long periods of being on top in the second half, and Jack Lester scored an undeserved third in stoppage time.

Chesterfield were ahead in only the second minute as Robertson’s corner somehow found its way straight in. In the sixth minute the Stags had a goal disallowed when Hamshaw’s cross was headed in by McAliskey but the big striker was half a yard offside. Dawson had a powerful shot on 9 minutes which was brilliantly saved by Roche. From the resulting corner, Dawson scored from 22 yards with a magnificent strike. Dawson for booked for his celebrations.

Chesterfield finished the half strongly. Fletcher headed against the crossbar for Chesterfield on 43 and the Stags were lucky to escape a penalty when Mullins fouled Lester. But it was no surprise in stoppage time when Lowry put Chesterfield back in front tapping in at the near post after Leven’s shot hit the post.

Half time 1-2

Early in the second half, Chesterfield hit the top of the bar through Leven. On 51 minutes, Bullock put Boulding through on goal 1 on 1 but Roche saved with his legs. Another great chance and a poor finish, just like the first minute at Peterborough. Minutes later, McIntosh had a free header from Hamshaw’s free kick but he headed wide.

Boulding was brought down by the keeper on 57 minutes and amazingly the keeper escaped with a yellow. Poor refereeing by Kevin Friend, who was having a shocker. Chesterfield had no reserve keeper on the bench. From the resulting free kick on the edge of the box, McIntosh’s shot was palmed away by the keeper who shouldn’t have been on the pitch. It was all Mansfield. McAllister how into the side netting on 66 minutes. McAllister was immediately replaced by Sleath.

A rare Chesterfield break on 67 minutes, saw the Lester have a goal disallowed. Lester himself may not have been offside as Rooney was in an offside position. A lucky break.

Buxton received a second yellow card on 73 minutes and was sent off. It was a stupid challenge, when there was no real danger. McAliskey was replaced by Holmes on 81 minutes. Roche made an incredible save from Boulding’s point-blank range shot from 4 yards on 86 minutes.

Lester made it 3-1 in the third minute of stoppage time despite appearing to be offside.
