Season 07/08 Stagsnet Match Report
Johnstone`s Paint Trophy Northern Section Round 1
Mansfield Town
0 - 1
 Rotherham United

 Sharps 49
Attendance: 1578 (356 from Rotherham)

Date: 4 September 2007

The Stags made four changes for the visit of local rivals Rotherham United. Out went the injured McIntosh and Bullock, the suspended Bell and Michael Boulding was rested. In came youngsters Danny Sleath, Nathan Arnold, Chris Wood and Ian Holmes. Wood started at right back with Mullins partnering Buxton at centre half.

The game could barely have got off to a worse start for the home side, within 5 minutes influential midfielder Stephen Dawson limped off with a hamstring injury. He was replaced by Dan Martin. In truth, very little worthy of note happened for the next 40 minutes, one long range effort from Sleath flew just over the bar but it was the visitors who looked the more threatening and Muggleton did well just before half time to save at the feet of Newsham.

Half Time 0-0

The stalemate was broken within the opening 5 minutes of the second half. Sharps headed home a right wing free kick leaving Muggleton no chance - on balance it was no more than the Miller deserved. From then on there was lots of huff and puff but very little end product with Holmes and McAliskey struggling to make any impact in attack. McAliskey was replaced by Reet just short of the hour in the hope it would stir things up and it was Reet who almost got on the end of the Stags best move of the game, Sleath putting Arnold clear on the left and his low cross just avoided the Stags sub. Moments later Hamshaw was rested and replaced by Rory Boulding. However, that attack was pretty much as good as it got for the Stags and they had to be thankful for an outstanding challenge from Martin near the end not to have been further behind.

So the annual round one exit from this trophy was complete, with barely a whimper. Mullins had another fine game at centre half, his place now surely cemented in the side but for me he was just pipped for Man of the Match by Dan Martin, who had his most impressive game in a Stags shirt. Other than that, not a lot to cheer about!!

Man of the Match: Dan Martin
