Stags came to Edgeley Park to try & extend their unbeaten run to 5 games in the league against a much improved, of late, Stockport County, who are the shut out kings of the league at the moment.

Stags welcomed back captain Jake Buxton from a 1 game suspension with Jon Olav Hjelde making way being dropped to the bench. Conlon was sitting out his final game of his 3 match suspension.

Stockport did very well to get the game on this afternoon after the inclement weather that the country has had in the last few days & with other local games at Rochdale, Chester & Shrewsbury being called off. The pitch was very rutted & bobbly & didn’t suit football being played on the floor.

The game got off to a scrappy start & followed from end to end without any real efforts on goal at either end.

In the 2nd minute Stags forced the first corner of the game, which sadly came to nothing.

Neither side were playing very well, but a ball over the top of the Stockport defence in the 15th minute by Browny sent Mickey Boulding away, who forced a great save from the giant man mountain Stockport keeper Hennessey.

2 minutes later a bad mistake by Jelleyman in defence led to Stockport being 2 on 1 with Baptiste, fortunately the ball was somehow scrambled out for a corner. From the resulting inswinging corner by Rose the Stags defence just stood & watched while Elding blasted the ball high into the net with White firmly rooted on his line.
Amazingly 3 minutes later Browny played in Mullins on the right hand by line & his cross flew right across the Stockport goal with any sort of deflection would have ended up in the back of the net.

Ex-Hatters player Hamshaw was getting booed every time he touched the ball. He was upended by Proudlock, who was booked for the foul. From the resulting free kick by Hamshaw, Mickey Boulding could only direct his free header straight at keeper Hennessey.

The Referee & linesman, nearest the Stags fans made some very poor decisions & were in my opinion “homers”

On the half hour mark the very vocal Stags fans launched into an ironic chant of “There’s only one Barry Coleman” followed by “Haslam Out”

Browny & Hamshaw swapped wings in the 31st minute. Dawson played a defence splitting pass to Mickey Boulding, who won a corner. The corner was taken short by Hamshaw to Dawson, who returned the ball to Hamshaw, who shot over & wide of target.

In the 37th minute Baptiste brought down Pilkington just outside the area & amazing the totally inept homer referee gave a penalty much to Baptiste’s annoyance. Adam Proudlock took the penalty & fired it down the middle of the goal & it was well saved by Jason White with his legs. Baptiste was immediately booked for dissent when the penalty had been missed.

Just before half time Mickey Boulding was sent through one on one with the keeper & looked certain to score, but the keeper made another great save.

Stags came out in the 2nd half with Billy Dearden’s half time team talk ringing in their ears & started to take the game to the Hatters. The game flowed from end to end with each side creating good changes. The worrying sight of Jason White continually staying on his line filled me with nerves. He took a volley full in the face to keep out yet another Stockport attack in the 47th minute.

In the 50th minute Stags fans were delighted to see ardent Stags fan & freelance photographer Dan Westwell taking pictures pitch side in front of them. They burst into a chant of “There’s only one Danny Westwell”

Seconds later a fizzing snapshot from Johnny Mullins flashed narrowly wide from 25 yards out.

At the other end Mullins made a great headed clearance to deny Stockport attack. Stockport forced 3 consecutive corners, but fortunately they came to nothing.

On the hour mark Billy Dearden made his first change bringing on Rory Boulding for Brown, which meant Hamshaw played wide right, Mickey Boulding wide left & Rory playing up front along side Gritton.

Shortly afterwards Stockport mounted another attack & a deft overhead flick from the impressive Anthony Elding hit the bar with Jason White completely beaten & rooted on his line.

A very deft pass from Rory Boulding sent his big brother Mickey away on the left hand side of the area & his shot cannoned back off the bar & was scrambled quickly out for a corner, which came to nothing.

In the 75 minute with Stags now forcesively seeking an equaliser Mickey Boulding was fouled just inside the area, but amazingly the ref gave a free kick just outside the area. Yet another inconsistent refereeing performance!!
Hamshaw’s shot hit the 4 man wall, but stuck a hand. Hamshaw, Jelleyman & Mickey Boulding all appealed for a penalty, which was waved away by the homer ref.

In the 84 minute Nathan Arnold came on for the lacklustre D’Laryea, but it came too late. Stags searched for an equaliser, but they were shut out.

Stags should count themselves unlucky that they didn’t get anything out this game. On the balance of play they deserved a draw.
