INEPT STAGS DRAW WITH 10 MAN SHREWS

It was a case of after the Lord Mayors Show at Field Mill today following the dazzling 5 star show against Torquay in midweek, Stags failed to capitalise on that performance & maintain any constituency.

Billy Dearden was forced into changing a winning team. Out went Captain Jake Buxton, serving a 1 match suspension for 5 yellow cards. Billy gave the captain’s armband to Jelleyman much to my surprise. Mullins came in at right back & Baptiste slotted in at Centre Back, otherwise it was an unchanged team.

The game started brightly with both teams playing long balls through midfield. Stags had their first chance in the 6th minute when Simon Brown’s 25 yard snap shot from just outside the area was well saved by the Shrews keeper.

Shrewsbury were winning everything in midfield & Stags were second best to everything. The Shrews frontline of ex-Stag Derek Asamoah & Symes were causing problems for the Stags defence

On 10 minutes a great surging run through midfield by Dawson, who fed Brown wide left, which was crossed first time to the onrushing Mickey Boulding, but keeper MacKenzie smothered well at his feet.

Unluckily for the Stags the game was kicked into life by Shrewsbury in the 13th minute. A long diagonal ball through midfield picked out Asamoah on his own on the right hand side of the penalty area & he calmly fired a low shot across Jason White & into the far corner of the net to put Shrewsbury 1-0 up. The curse of ex-Stags players continued.

The goal sparked Shrewsbury into playing some very attacking football & forced Stags into making too many misplaced passes. It appeared that Shrewsbury was doubling up on Stags players in midfield.

Shrewsbury’s tactics were frustrating the Stags & they were only too happy to waste time at any given opportunity, which whistle happy referee Russell didn’t do anything about much to the annoyance of the Stags fans.

Stags created very few chances worth noting in the first half & was heading towards halftime when Stags luck changed. Following a foul by Baptiste on Symes in the 42 minute, Symes retaliated by punching Baptiste & was straight red carded. Baptiste did get cautioned as well for the original tackle.

HALFTIME – STAGS 0 SHREWS 1

Straight from the kick off in the 2nd half Hamshaw attacked down to the right wing & fired just over the Shrews goal.

Billy Dearden had made a couple of tactical changes to his team swapping Bap to right back & Mullins to centre half.

Stags were now playing with a sense of urgency against the 10 men of Shrewsbury. Wave after wave of attacks came to nothing & I thought that we’d get nothing from the game.

But, that changed bang on the hour mark, when Hamshaw & Bap combined down the right & Hamshaw swung in a great cross to the near post, which was met by a diving header from Brown to equalise. In my opinion Stags were very fortunate to be back on level terms.

Stags piled on the pressure but the Shrews defence remained resolute.

Shrewsbury players were time wasting at every given opportunity, which the ref did nothing about again.

It didn’t appear that a winning goal was going to come & that Stags would have to settle for a draw.

Stags sent on Rory Boulding for Hjelde in the 85 minutes to try & find a winner but alas it didn’t arrive.

A very poor performance by the team, but nonetheless another point has been added to our total.
