REPORT BY SEAN THE MAD STAG AT BELLE VIEW

SPINELESS STAGS EXIT FA CUP

On a night when Mansfield Town went down in Doncaster Rovers history books, as being the last opponents to play a midweek floodlit game at their ramshackle old Belle View ground before they move to their new stadium on January 1st 2007, along with the excitement of the FA Cup and a plum home tie against Premiership Bolton Wanderers awaiting the winners of this replay, Peter Shirtliff again tinkered with his starting line up, following another passionless display against Bury in the League last Saturday.

A major surprise was Danny Reet being left out of the squad altogether, even though he was at the game sitting with his Dad and a friend behind the Stags fans in the seats in the main Grandstand. Into the starting line up came Nathan Arnold on the right wing, with Mickey Boulding dropping to the bench. Matty Hamshaw started the game on the left wing.

Stags kicked off attacking the goal, behind which, were the mass hoards of standing and very vocal Stags fans.

It took all of 5 minutes for our endearing Yorkshire friends to launch into a chorus of “Scab”

The game was very scrappy to start with, with passes going astray from both sides.

Donny Rovers were the first side to mount a serious attack on goal in the 8th minute when their left winger got the better of Buxton and whipped in a dangerous, which went through James Coppinger, who missed a golden opportunity to score by firing hurriedly wide.

Stags resorted to pumping long balls from out of defence over the midfield for Barker and Brown to race onto. The Rovers defence and keeper Ben Smith were rarely troubled and it was food and drink for them.

Donny started winning the midfield battle, with Coke & D’Laryea making too many unforced errors and missed placed passes.

In the 21st minute Simon Brown managed to get down the left wing and cross the ball into the Donny area from the bye line where he found Arnold, who whipped the ball to Matty Hamshaw and he fired a shot on target and off a defender and out for a corner. The corner was dealt with excellently by the Donny defence, who released the ball to Brian Stock and he threaded a brilliant through ball to McCammon, who adeptly slotted the ball past Muggleton and put Doncaster Rovers 1-0 up

The Stags players were clueless and lacked passion and desire to get back in the game and dare I say it they weren’t fit to wear the shirt.

A baffling substitution was made by Shirtliff, when he brought on Johnny Mullins on for Buxton with 10 seconds of the 1st half to play!!

HALF TIME – DONCASTER ROVERS 1 MANSFIELD TOWN 0

Our Messiah & CEO Mr Haslam decided to sit on the bench next to the dugout for the 2nd half so that he could smoke his cigars, which he could do in the Donny Directors Box.

Straight from the kick off Doncaster Rovers were up for finishing the game off very quickly. In the 47th minute Brian Stock cut in from the right wing into the area and fired shot, which came back off the angle of post and out to Gareth Roberts, who fired in a rasping shot, which Muggleton made a good save to concede a corner.

3 minutes later from a long throw in from the right Donny scored again. The throw in was flicked on by the dangerous McCammon and it fell to Heffernan, who adeptly turned John-Baptiste and fire a low shot into the right hand corner of the net.

Stags were totally clueless and never looked like scoring in a month of Sundays.

Hamshaw was by this time playing in central midfield and was the only Stags player to show any willingness and passion to take the game to Donny Rovers.

Shirtliff did make 2 further substitutions bringing on Mickey Boulding for Brown in the 68th minute & Beardsley for Barker in the 80th minute. The Captains armband was taken over by Alex John-Baptiste.

By this time I stopped taking notes, as the Stags performance was dire again. The lack of motivation, pride & passion worries me greatly and Hamshaw was the only player that stood out for me tonight. The rest of the team weren’t fit to wear the shirt & should take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror and ask themselves why they keep turning out dire performances.

FINAL SCORE – DONCASTER ROVERS 2 MANSFIELD TOWN 0
