SPOTLAND HOODOO CONTINUES
REPORT BY SEAN THE MAD STAG At a cold and windy floodlit Spotland Stadium, where the Stags have lost 7 out of their last 8 visits, Peter Shirtliff made two changes to his starting line up. In came Danny Reet up front, replacing Chris Beardsley and Mickey Boulding starting wide left, replacing Asa Charlton, with Gareth Jelleyman dropping back to the left back position. Ex Stags boss Steve Parkin named ex-Stags John Doolan in his starting line-up and Adam Rundle and Darrell Clarke as substitutes. Stags fans were in fine voice and great banter just before kick off and were revelling in the last visit to Spotland by singing “We lost 2 nil, but Palmer went” and “Taxi for Haslam” The Stags kicked off the game playing into a freezing wind. The early stages of the game were fast and furious and end to end. Rochdale had the first shot at goal, within the first 2 minutes, when a ball was played right across the Stags penalty box to their left hand flank, where Cooksey flashed a fine left footed shot wide of Carl Muggleton’s left hand post. Mansfield first shot at goal a few moments later came from a Mickey Boulding snap shot, which fizzled wide. Both sides were very poor and the ball spent most of its time in the air. Stags couldn’t get any cohesion going through midfield and looked very unstable defensively. On 8 minutes Stags won a free kick on the right wing, Hamshaw fired in a lovely cross right onto an unmarked Richie Barker’s head, which he headed narrowly over the bar. Stags fans were singing and chanting throughout the game and with some irony sang “You’re worse than us at home” to non-singing Dale fans. This sprang the Dale fans into their first chant of the game in the 20 minute. In the 21 minute a Muggleton free kick, which was flicked on by Barker and Hamshaw through to Mickey Boulding, who shot on the turn and forced yet another Stags corner, which came to nothing. In 24 minute the Dale fans were singing again this time it was because they took the lead from a right wing cross onto the head of Dale leading scorer Chris Dagnall, who was unmarked and looked marginally offside, which gave Muggleton no chance. The Rochdale goal came against the run of play and it inspired them to ply a lot of pressure on the Stags goal. Muggleton produced a great 2 handed save from a point blank header from Dagnall. Rochdale then forced 3 quick corners in a row, each time Captain Fantastic Barker save the day with blocks and headers. Stags efforts at goal were made from long distance snap shots and didn’t force Gilks in the Dale goal in making a real save. A free kick was awarded by referee Mathieson to Rochdale in the 41 minute, when clearly Glen Murray dived over John-Baptiste’s foot. The resulting free kick from 20 yards out was curled round the wall into Muggleton’s bottom left hand corner of the goal. The scorer was non other than ex-Stag John Doolan. Half time arrived with boo’s from the Stags fans and chants of “Haslam Out” HALF TIME ROCHDALE 2 STAGS 0 Stags came out fired up for the 2nd half and tried to take the game to Rochdale. A Reet turn and shot straight over the Rochdale bar in the 50 minute was his last contribution to the game, he was replaced by Simon Brown, much to the delight of the Stags fans, who chanted “Browny, Browny” soon after Mickey Boulding cut in from the left hand flank and fired his right footed shot wide of goal. Dale made their 1st substitution of the game bringing on beanpole giant striker Sako for the Olympic Diving Champion Murray. On 63 minutes a long hopeful punt down field by the Dale defensive was misjudged by Hjelde, which left Sako 1 on 1 with Muggleton, who produced another top draw save. An animated Peter Shirtliff made his 2nd substitution, in the 67 minute, bringing on Calum Lloyd for Hamshaw. A few minutes later Simon Brown got in a right wing cross for Barker to head down into to the ground and bounce up onto the bar and out for a goal kick. At this point I thought we wouldn’t in a month of Sundays. Shirtliff’s final throw of the dice looked desperate, he replaced a totally inept Coke and replaced him with Jake Buxton!!! Jake Buxton I hear you cry? Yes, playing in central midfield. Bucko’s introduction in my opinion changed the game, he chased everything and popped up in every position and covered nearly every blade of grass. In 82 minute Hjelde became the first player of the game to be booked when he fouled beanpole Sako on the edge of the box. From the resulting free kick Muggleton produced another outstanding 1 handed save to deny Doolan his 2nd goal of the game. Muggleton punched the resulting in swinging corner out to safety. Poor defending by John-Baptiste in the 87 minute left Sako 1 on 1 with Muggleton again. This time incredibly fired his shot well wide of target, with the goal at his mercy. A minute later Dale keeper Gilks made his first save of the game from Simon Brown, who was clean through on goal following a Buxton flick on. Final whistle sounded in the 93rd minute, which brought about another league away defeat. Mansfield Town were very poor all game and we beaten by an equally poor Rochdale |
