Season 06/07 Stagsnet Match Report
Mansfield Town
1 - 0
 Nottingham Forest
Barker 45+1
match abandoned 72 mins due to lightning
Attendance: 5329 (2104 from Forest)
Date: 22 Jul 06

The Stags made a couple of changes from the side which started against Derby in midweek. Collins replaced Jelleyman at left back and Lloyd came in for Dawson in the centre of the midfield.

In a competitive opening half chances were few and far between, Forest just about dominated possession but the Stags looked more dangerous in the final third, with Simon Brown giving the Forest defence a torrid time. The closest Forest came was with a couple of close range efforts, both of which flew above Carl Muggleton's goal, whilst the Stags had a Barker header cleared off the line and Hamshaw had a powerful shot from the right hand edge of the area well saved by Forest keeper Smith. As it looked like the half would end goalless, the Stags took the lead right on the stroke of half-time. Brown and Hamshaw combined well and Barker was on hand to head into the roof of the net from close range.

Half-Time 1-0

Forest changed their entire outfield team for the second half, only keeper Smith remained. However, this did little to give Forest a greater threat, though twice the pace of Tyson demanded excellent defending from the immaculate Baptiste. Again Forest had more of the play, but Muggleton wasn't called upon to make a save, with Forests shooting wayward and the Stags defending in central areas excellent. However, Forest were getting some joy down the Stags right, Mullins was often drawn into the centre leaving the right hand side exposed, but despite getting in some promising positions, Forest failed to capitalise. The Stags had a great shout for a penalty as the promised thunderstorm arrived and the heavens opened up. As the lightening grew close and the thunder louder, referee Salisbury, who up until that point had managed to give Forest just about every decision (including two very dubious corners), called a halt to the game.

So more positives from a pre-season game against higher league oposition. A few times Mullins and Hamshaw were caught out defensively and whilst both are excellent on the ball and in attacking areas, this is something they will need to look at - had Forest been at their best the Stags could have been punished. The news that Michael Boulding has agreed a one year contract gives the Stags the extra option to Birchall on the left, who again did OK, but again looked as though that wasn't his natural position. Man of the match was very simple today, Alex John-Baptiste was sublime, at his effortless best - Stags fans should enjoy watching him grace the Amber shirt whilst they can.
