FIVE STAR STAGS MURDER BOSTON
Report by Martin Shaw at Field Mill Mansfield produced their best 45 minutes of the season to take them to the biggest win since 2003. The Stags were simply rampant in the second half, after a quiet first half, which was brightened by Barker’s splendid opener on 43 minutes. Four goals in the second half, along with a Wilson piledriver against the post, was reward for a brilliant second half. The Stags now seem to be safe from relegation at long last and can look forward to trying to finish in the top half of the table. Talk of the play-offs however seems fanciful. Mansfield made one change with Dawson replacing Coke. Coke was on the bench, along with Day, who returned from injury, but there was no place for Rundle. Boston included former Stag Jamie Clarke on the bench The first chance of the game came inside the first minute as Barker latched onto a long ball into the Boston box, but under pressure from the keeper, fired over the bar. Uhlenbeek put in a fine cross on 3 minutes which came to nothing, and a minute later, Barker had another chance as he sent a left-foot shot out for a throw-in. He never looked in the right position for the shot. On 10 minutes, Barker broke into the box again and should have shot, but instead squared a ball to his right where Dawson chipped a weak shot at the keeper. Four minutes later Boston threatened for the first time, but Buxton defended it well with a header away from a corner, and then Baptiste made a great block to prevent a shot. On 25 minutes, Reet played a fine ball for Uhlenbeek but the attack came to nothing. On 29 minutes, Jelleyman made a great block from a shot and a minute later came the best chance of the game so far. Dudfield turned the Stags defence inside the box, and shot low to Pressman’s left, but the Stags keeper got down to save it, though may have been disappointed not to hang onto the ball, as a Stags player cleared it. On 31 minutes, Reet had a shot from a tight angle on the left, but the keeper made a good save. From our position in the commentary box, we couldn’t tell if the shot was going in. Four minutes after that, Reet had another chance when he hooked a shot wide. But the Stags made the breakthrough on 43 minutes and the goal came out of the blue. A cross came in from the left by Dawson, and after the ball looped up in the air from Hjelde, Barker met it on the volley with his left foot, and sent a great shot just inside the right post, giving the keeper no chance. Half time 1-0 Mansfield were 2-0 ahead on 47 minutes. Reet had his back to goal inside the box, and played a ball square to Uhlenbeek, who shot. Uhlenbeek’s shot was going well wide but defender Greaves, deflected it into his own net. Just two minutes later it was 3-0. barker back-heeled for Uhlenbeek, who played a ball forward into the box for Reet, who showed good strength to beat a defender and fire under the keeper with the outside of his right foot. There may have been a suspicion of offside but no-one from Mansfield was complaining. Coke replaced Dawson on 58 minutes after Dawson took a nasty knock. On 61 minutes it was 4-0. Wilson made an outstanding run from deep, down the left, got into the box and crossed to the far post where Uhlenbeek had an empty net from 2 yards. He couldn’t miss and he didn’t, firing into the roof of the net. The goal was all about Laurence Wilson - quite brilliant stuff. Two minutes later, Wilson nearly had a goal of his own and what a stunner it would have been. He made himself a shooting chance from 25 yards and fired powerfully against the base of the right post with the keeper motionless. The Stags were quite simply magnificent at this stage, and it was to continue. With the score at 4-0, there was no let-up for the shell-shocked visitors as Brown entered the fray in place of Reet. On 67 minutes, Coke made a brilliant run of about 50 yards, fed the ball to Buxton, who in turn fed Uhlenbeek, but his shot failed to test the keeper. A minute later, Coke did well again, but drove a shot wide from distance. Birchall replaced Wilson who received a standing ovation, and on 81 minutes it was 5-0. Brown did well to earn a corner. The corner from Uhlenbeek was played short to Brown in the box. He turned his defender and had his legs taken from beneath him for a cast-iron penalty. Brown grabbed the ball and took the penalty, blasting it slightly to the left, sending the keeper the wrong way. The game ended with the Stags having an amazing unbroken spell of 27 passes with the home fans cheering every one, before the referee put Boston out of the misery. So a tremendous win for Mansfield, and a vital one to finally banish thoughts of relegation. But the manner of the win was one to raise hopes for better times in the future. The whole team was outstanding, but Wilson and Uhlenbeek were the pick and involved in most the goals, Wilson just shading it as my man of the match. Man of the match: Laurence Wilson |

Buxton 8 Excellent first half defensively. Did well going forward in second half. Baptiste 8 Some great tackles and blocks in the first half. Barely needed in second half. Hjelde 7 Solid game throughout; settled into decent run of form. Jelleyman 7 Good game; one great block to prevent a chance. Uhlenbeek 9 Crossing was generally excellent. Involved in most of the goals. D'Laryea 7 Did well. Dawson 7 Did well in the centre of midfield. Wilson 9 Outstanding. Brilliant play for the second goal, and then a brilliant shot against the post moments later. Barker 8 Great goal to break the deadlock. Led the line well as usual. Reet 7 Good game, deserved his goal. |
