The Stags made one enforced change from the side that beat Grimsby in midweek. With Gareth Jelleyman suspended, Adam Rundle came in on the left wing with Laurence Wilson dropping to left back. The Stags also had Simon Brown back again, still not fully fit he had to make do with a place on the bench.
The Welsh side had the better of what was a poor first half. The Stags looked a little short on ideas and despite getting into many good crossing positions, the final ball from Rundle on the left never met a Stags striker. Wrexham were first to register a shot on target with a long range free kick hit straight at Pressman. However, Pressman was not so confident with his next involvement in the game, first he managed to mis-kick the ball straight to a Wrexham midfielder and then, after Baptiste had got the keeper out of trouble, spilled the corner that followed and had to be grateful to D'Laryea to clear the ball. Probably the Stags best effort of the half came on ten minutes, Dawson and Baptiste combined well down the right, Bapstiste sent in a decent cross though it was a little behind Barker who managed to head on target but Ingham saved easily. At the other end a poor, aimless pass from Hjelde almost presented Wrexham with the opening goal, the pass we think was aimed at Baptiste but went straight to Holt but his shot was easy for Pressman. Dawson made a typically energtic break through the Wrexham midfield, but his last touch just took the ball too far away from him to have a shot and the visitors cleared the danger. The closest the game came to a goal was on 40 minutes when Spender hit a superb low volley which smashed off the inside of the post and straight to Buxton who cleared. Half Time 0-0 The second half was barely five minutes old when the Stags gifted Wrexham the lead. Buxton had time to clear his lines but instead opted to pass back to Pressman, his pass was weak and intercepted by Derbyshire who easily (far too easily in my view) rounded Pressman to score. The Stags almost replied instantly, Reet finding some space but hitting his shot straight at Inman. Reet, who had a poor game, was then replaced by Simon Brown but within a few minutes of the substitution the Stags were two behind. Derbyshire broke through the Stags defence, outpacing Hjelde, but his low shot looked weak but somehow squeezed under Pressman's ample frame and into the net. Uhlenbeek came on straight after the goal to replace Rundle. The Stags grabbed a lifeline just two minutes later, Simon Brown did superbly to beat two defenders before being hacked down by Williams inside the area, how the defender escaped a booking remains a mystery, but at least the penalty was awarded which Barker calmly converted. Three minutes later and the game was all square, this time Brown combined with Uhlenbeek, the latter put in a perfect cross which Barker headed home for his 19th of the season. From then on it was anybodys game as both sides went for the win. The Stags came the closest to securing all three points when Buxton leapt to head a cross from Lloyd straight at Ingham. Stags boss Peter Shirtliff was understandably very disappointed with the defending for both Wrexham goals, rightly so as they were both gifts. However, he must have been delighted with the reaction of his players to going behind and certainly how all three substitutions he made did the trick. There were quite a few below par performances though, Pressman had a very shaky game, Buxton made a terrible error leading to the first goal and Coke, Rundle and Reet, who were all substituted, we all well below par. On the plus side D'Laryea was excellent in central midfield, as was Dawson and all three substitutes made a strong claim for a starting place at Torquay next week. Richie Barker now has 19 goals in a side which has struggled all season, a truly remarkable effort from the Stags skipper. However, just shading Barker, D'Laryea and Dawson for man of the match was Laurence Wilson. The last few minutes summed his day up for me, he took a very heavy knock towards the end of the game which required lengthy treatment, he eventually hobbled back on and within a minute went into a 50-50 fully committed, winning the ball and setting the Stags on another attack.
