Season 05/06 Stagsnet Match Report
Coca-Cola League 2
Carlisle United
1 - 0
 Mansfield Town
Hawley 80
Attendance: 5293 (249 from Mansfield)
Date: 15 October 2005

Mansfield stay firmly rooted to the foot of the league after a poor
second half display allowed Carlisle to claim victory thanks to a
clinical piece of finishing from Karl Hawley in the 79th minute.
The Stags failed to create any serious attempts on goal from as
early as the 46th minute and clearly need to address their awful
away record if they are to haul themselves out of the current plight.

It could and should have been different if Simon Brown had not
wasted a couple of gilt edged chances in a first half pretty much
dominated by the visitors.

In truth it was a poor game, Carlisle played like a side on a losing
streak, and Mansfield have simply forgotten how to win away.

Carlisle were quickly out of the blocks, and Kevin Pressman had to
get down smartly in the 3rd minute to smother a low shot as Carlisle
broke down the left flank.

It was 10 minutes before the Stags threatened, when Brown was
tripped on the edge of the penalty area the ball was played into
Barker's path, his blasted effort sailing just wide. The Stags pressed
again, with Coke shooting wide and Barker heading
wide when well placed.

Simon Brown then wasted two real chances, first he robbed Kevin Gray
on 20 minutes, but shot tamely at the keeper when through on goal.
Crucially 1 minute later he beat the offside trap and ran through
unchallenged, a goal looked certain but his deliberate placement saw
the ball rebound off the foot of the post, Uhlenbeek then appeared
to be fouled as the ball came back to him on the edge of the box,
but the penalty claims were waved away.

Pressman then kept his goal intact with an acrobatic leap to his
left to pluck out a firm header as Carlisle tried to force their way
back into the match.

The Stags though were definitely in the ascendancy as the home crowd
grew restless at their team's lack of control on the ball.

On 41 minutes Baptiste played Rundle through on the left and from
his low centre Barker's effort was well blocked at near post.
The final minutes of the half were played out with the ball mainly
in the air, as both sides showed a lack of quality in possession.

HT 0-0

From the second half restart, the Stags fashioned another clear
chance, good work by Barker and Rundle allowed Jelleyman to swing in
a cross that Brown met unchallenged but his effort sailed high and

The Stags last real effort came on 56 minutes as Coke won a blocked
tackle in midfield and the ball ran through to Brown in another one
on one, but he pulled the trigger too early and his weak effort was
easily saved.

It was downhill from there on as Carlisle came more into game,
although Baptiste and Hjelde dealt comfortably with most things and
Buxton was immaculate at right back.

Birchall replaced Brown on 62 minutes and Rundle limped off injured
on 68 with Littlejohn his replacement.

Neither made any impact as Mansfield's route one ball to Barker was
easily snuffed out by ex- Stag Kevin Gray.

The Carlisle goal was the only real piece of quality on show all
afternoon as Hawley beat Baptiste to a through ball down the right
channel and skilfully lifted the ball over the advancing Pressman.

Hardly anything of note took place in the last 10 minutes,
punctuated by several Stags players going down injured. A rare
appearance though for Callum Llloyd who replaced Dawson on 82 mins.
