Mansfield Town were beaten 2-0 by Peterborough United in their second pre-season friendly of the 2020/21 season. Whilst it was Mansfield’s second game, this was the fourth match for Peterborough. Mansfield’s first game was on Saturday against Burton Albion, but no information is available from that game with no media attendance and no live stream.

The match was played behind closed doors, as all pre-season games will be, and indeed at least the first few weeks of the league season too, due to the Covid-19 pandemic. An HD quality live stream of the game was available for fans of both sides to watch.

It was played as two separate matches, each with two 30 minutes halves, thus 120 minutes in total, and separate sides in each match.

The Stags gave a run-out to 6 of their 7 new signings, and the Stags sides included several U21 and U18 players.

Four players were absent: Ollie Clarke (new signing), Danny Rose and Joe Riley through injury. Graham Coughlan explained after the game that Joe Riley has suffered an ACL injury in training last week, which will keep him out for 6-8 months, so just about the whole season, and this is terrible news. Danny Rose (tight hip flexor after the game on Saturday against Burton) and Ollie Clarke (a bit of tightness in his calf) are only minor injuries and we’ll probably see them next week according to Coughlan. Will Tomlinson meanwhile has been fined two weeks wages and suspended for “acting the clown down the town and you don’t do that as a professional footballer” according to Coughlan post-match. The suspension is pending further investigation and a fuming Coughlan said “he won’t tolerate any of that nonsense”. Coughlan said the maximum he could fine him was two weeks and the best he could do was suspend him.

1st match team (3-5-2): (shirt numbers in brackets, may not reflect squad numbers for the season)
Aidan Stone;
Rollin Menayese (3) (new signing, right side of back 3), Farrend Rawson (4) (new signing), Aiden Walker (45) (U21, left side of back 3);
Kellan Gordon (6) (right wing-back), Harry Charsley (8), Alistair Smith (15), George Maris (7) (new signing), Jason Law (46);
Josh Scott (44) (U18 striker), Jordan Bowery (16) (new signing).

2nd match team (3-5-2):
Marek Stech (new signing);
Trialist (2) (see below) (right side of back 3), Ryan Sweeney (5), Kian Sketchley (49) (U21, left side of back 3);
James Clarke (14) (right wing-back), Kyle Tomlin (47, U18, scored long range goal in FA Youth cup last season), Tyrese Sinclair (18), Jimmy Knowles (17) (left side of midfield), Mal Benning (10) (left wing-back);
Jamie Reid (42) (new signing), Andy Cook (9).

The trialist central defender in the 2nd match has not yet been named. He has been training with the club since the first day of pre-season training. When he is named by the club, I will update this report so that it is accurate for the archives.
UPDATE: the trialist central defender was named a week later as Aaron O'Driscoll, released in June by Southampton.

1st match:

Posh have got the dangerous Siriki Dembele and Mo Eisa up front, with the talented George Cooper in there as well.

3 mins: A free kick from new signing George Maris is too close to the keeper.

4 mins: Young Josh Scott fires well wide from a tight angle on the left

5 mins: Maris does well to charge down, the ricochet puts Jordan Bowery in, his shot is pushed away by the keeper, and Maris forces a corner from the rebound. From the resulting corner, young Aiden Walker heads up in the air and it goes wide.

6 mins: The first chance for Peterborough as Dembele shoots wide from 22 yards.

11 mins: Aidan Stone is out well to save at the feet of Dembele.

17 mins: Good defending by Jason Law against George Cooper.

23 mins: Alistair Smith gets in a shot from the edge of the area but it’s half-blocked and bobbles wide.

24 mins: Charsley loses the ball but does well to immediately win it back.

30 mins: HT 0-0

The first half of the first match is promising for the Stags, who have had slightly the upper hand, with good performances all round.

33 mins: 0-1 Peterborough take the lead. George Cooper slides a ball along the edge of the area and the trickery of Dembele draws a clear foul from Aiden Walker. It’s tough for young Walker up against a top player and he showed a bit of inexperience there but he’ll learn from that. Dembele dispatches the penalty into the top right corner giving Stone no chance.

35 mins: A cross from the right from Thompson and Mo Eisa heads straight at Stone.

44 mins: A run from Kellan Gordon down the right, and his cross is just behind Bowery.

45 mins: Aiden Walker does really well to head back to Stone under pressure from Dembele.

46 mins: A quick free kick from Posh, Ward crosses from the right to Eisa who forces a good save from Stone. From the resulting corner, Thompson heads over the bar.

50 mins: Another Posh corner from George Cooper is header well wide and over by Cartwright.

50 mins: At the other end, in a rare Stags attack in this half, Josh Scott does well to pounce on a loose ball, but his shot from a near-impossible angle is straight at the keeper.

51 mins: 0-2 Peterborough extend their lead. George Boyd is through on goal from a good pass by Harrison Burrows, getting in behind Menayese and Rawson, and fires past Stone. Was Boyd offside as he ran through? Need to see the replay. UPDATE, from the video, it’s inconclusive, but Boyd is probably played onside by Walker.

55 mins: Rollin Menayese limps off. It doesn’t look a bad injury. Menayese is replaced by the Trialist central defender (see above) for the final 5 minutes of the first match.

60 mins: FT in the 1st match: 0-2

The second half of the first match saw Peterborough on top and the 2-0 scoreline didn’t flatter them. Given some of the quality in the Peterborough line-up, it’s perhaps not surprising. New signings Menayese and Rawson looked decent at the back though Boyd got in behind them for the second goal, and Maris did ok, more so in the first half. Bowery had an early shot but didn’t see much of the ball after that. Charsley had a good game in the first half.

2nd match:

61 mins: Kick off. (Timing and scoreline continued from the first match)

68 mins: Tyrese Sinclair crosses from the right, the keeper pushes under pressure from Andy Cook.

73 mins: A wonderful crossfield ball from Tyrese Sinclair to Benning who volleys wide. That was terrific from Sinclair.

74 mins: A quick and long throw-out from Stech, Cook heads on to Benning, whose low cross is claimed by the keeper.

78 mins: A shot from Tasdemir is parried by Stech but straight into the path of Jones, who is luckily offside. Stech got away with one there. At the other end, Benning tries a shot with the outside of the left boot but it’s well wide.

81 mins: Andy Cook is presented with a gift from the keeper who plays the ball straight to him. Cook takes the ball round the keeper but defender Mark Beevers gets back to block Cook’s shot and the ball rebounds off Cook so it’s a goal-kick.

82 mins: A shot from Taylor for Posh goes well wide.

87 mins: A good block from Sweeney from the edge of the area.

89 mins: Another good flick on from Cook, this time to Jamie Reid who wins a free kick 33 yards out. Sinclair, something of a free kick specialist for the reserves and when he has been out on loan, is entrusted with the kick. Sinclair’s kick poleaxes a defender and deflects over the bar. The resulting corner was cleared.

90 mins: HT 0-2 (0-0 in the 2nd match)

The first half of the second match saw the Stags have a few chances which they couldn’t convert. Cook got in a couple of good flick-ons, while Sweeney was looking good at the back. One great throw-out from new keeper Stech.

92 mins: Good defending from the Stags trialist to hold off a Posh striker and earn a free-kick.

95 mins: Sinclair breaks into the area but he’s tackled as he’s about to shoot.

96 mins: Good play from Jamie Reid as he makes space for a shot, which is deflected for a corner. The resulting corner from Benning is good, and Cook finds the space to get in a header but it’s over the bar.

99 mins: Sweeney clears from a low ball in.

103 mins: A great run from Tyrese Sinclair from inside his own half, though he pulls his shot wide of the left post.

104 mins: Sinclair plays a nice ball out to James Clarke on the right, but Clarke’s cross in is cleared.

105 mins: Ricky Jade Jones gets past young defender Kian Sketchley to the byline, but he runs the ball out of play.

110 mins: A free kick for Peterborough from Taylor is well over the bar.

119 mins: Jamie Reid has a shot from the edge of the area but it is blocked.

120 mins: FT 0-2 (0-0 in the 2nd match)

The second match finished 0-0. Tyrese Sinclair oozed talent for Mansfield as he has done every time I have seen him play for the youth team and reserves. It was a shame that he didn’t get a chance in the first team at the end of last season due to the pandemic when he probably would have done otherwise, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how he gets on when he surely gets his chance. Ryan Sweeney looked solid at the back. At the back and in midfield, this was a young side who did well in the circumstances. Up front Jamie Reid and Andy Cook did ok. Jimmy Knowles played on the left of midfield and didn’t really get into the game.

The next friendlies have not yet been announced. Stay tuned to mansfieldtown.net for details.
