Performance of the week in 1991

On 26 October 1991, Mansfield Town earned the Barclays League Performance of the Week award for a 4-1 win against Scunthorpe United at Glanford Park. It was the Stags sixth consecutive away win and kept them top of Division IV. Mansfield took the lead after 9 minutes when Phil Stant’s shot was saved by Paul Musselwhite, but Steve Wilkinson tapped the rebound into an empty net. Stags controlled the game but Tony Daws equalised for the Iron on 56 minutes. The Stags roared back into life with three goals in the final 12 minutes. First Steve Wilkinson took advantage of a bad back-pass from Stuart Hicks to nip in and lob the ball home. Then Hicks handled in the area and Stags captain Steve Charles confidently tucked home the penalty. Finally, Stant bustled his way into the box and squeezed his shot past the keeper and inside the left hand post. Stant celebrated by climbing up onto the fence in front of the Stags fans, in one of the most memorable celebrations that many Stags fans can remember.   Mansfield went on to gain promotion, while Scunthorpe defender Stuart Hicks was to join the Stags several years later and recently had to retire due to injury.
