Help with a date from the 1968/69 season

Postby Linby Stag » Sun Aug 12, 2018 4:48 pm

Hope someone with club records can help with this one. My dad took me to my first game aged 11 around November time 1968 after the family moved down from Yorkshire. My dad was a Burnley fan. Pretty sure we played Northampton and lost 2-0. My next game was the FA Cup 2nd round v Rotherham and the rest of that cup run ensured I was hooked.

Does anyone know the date of the home game v Northampton that season. I want to celebrate 50 years watching the Stags and need to know the date

att. of 4,635.
Rotherham game was 9th December, 1-0, (Ledger) att.12,876

I wonder how many other stags fans first ever game resulted in a loss?

I don't recall the date of my first game - but I think it was against Preston, and we won 3-0 or 3-1. I think it would have been between 1970- 1972. Can anyone confirm?

I also remember the worst game - A little while later we lost 5-0 at home to Bournemouth in a midweek game. Ted McDougal scored a hat-trick (by half time if i'm not mistaken). I was about 8 years old and distraught - and I learned my first harsh lesson of investing your feelings in a football team.

We beat Preston 3-1 at home on Saturday 17th April 1971 in front of 7,185 - scorers were a Dudley Roberts brace, and Dave Thompson, it was the 4th of 4 games in 7 days we played. The Bournemouth game was 29th October 1971, the game after that one was a 2-0 loss at County in front of 17,000 - the same season as Martin's 5-0 loss at home to Chesterfield in the League Cup.

Thanks Marky Mark - much appreciated. Dudley Roberts - the best header of the ball I have seen.
I am glad that I didn't attend (or even know about) that Chesterfield game that season!

My first game was the first home game of the 1970 season. Can’t remember it.

That is still one of my favourite ever Stags performances. We were absolutely electric that day, Lawrence and Corden on the wings, Greenacre was phenomenal. They were a division above us at the time and we could have easily had 10! A great time to be a Stags fan.

3-0 win over Swansea on 7/10/74, which was a Monday night. Scorers were Clarke, Laverick and McCaffrey in front of 3,672. A young Alan Curtis and Robbie James played for Swansea.

Oddly timed thread this, as I’ve recently been researching the same thing myself resulting in me scouring eBay for a programme from that game which arrived yesterday! The programme shows that it would’ve cost my dad 45p for admission to the North Stand and 25p for me.

Up the Stags.

My first game was vs Peterborough on 10th Sept 1960

We won 1-0 with a 70th minute winner on his home debut by Ken Wagstaff.

Apparently he had already scored twice in his three away games in the previous ten days.

What has really surprised me about the fixture list is the number of games played by the end of September.

The season didn't start until 20th August but we had played 12 league games by end of September.

Reason being no floodlights in them days.

:D My first memory was in the North Stand and not to stand close to the blue hand rails when we scored , everyone piling forward and being squashed against one ,scared the living daylights out of me.

I think after that mummy  made big brother take me in to the bishop street stand.

All i can remember Rod Arnold being goalie when i first went and Brighton comes to mind.

Will check back and see what comes to mind.
