Shaw Lane AFC (formerly Shaw Lane Aquaforce)

Postby Tippy Tappy Football » Fri Jun 08, 2018 4:31 pm

Craig Wood, the owner of Shaw Lane has decided to fold the first team after becoming frustrated with the level of support and failed attempts to change the name of the club to Barnsley Town. Shaw Lane play in the Northern Premier League and have been in existence since around 2012. Craig Wood has spent over £1 million taking the team from the Sheffield League (Step 7) to the NPL (Step 3). They of course played the Stags in the FA Cup this season which was broadcast live on BT Sport.

What would happen to AFC if Andy Saunders did the same and returned back to the Mill?

Let's hope JR doesn't turn his back on our club because of our poor gates.

Probably not, but they've chucked their toys out of the pram.

Largest home average for 14 years.
Largest league gate recorded for 13 years.

We've spent five years in the bottom division - highest finish 8th - apart from promotional blether last season we've not really had a sustained period at the top to attract more permanent floating fans.

Anyone who witnessed the years of gloom in the Conference (and I suspect that many didn't - numbers through the gate prove it) would take the last five years and see it as slow progress in getting the club back on its feet. Ten years ago we were on our backside, an example of footballing slow death - a shadow of what we see today.

The only thing missing is some success on the field (and a little bit of junior pricing foresight) to build the fan base.

Since JR took over every season, bar one, has seen the club move forwards, either in terms of league position, points tallies and crowd growth. Sometimes the progress is glacial but it's also that kind of slow forward momentum that can be sustained over the long term, however bleedin' frustrating it gets at times.

Not really bothered how fast we're progressing, as long as it's forward and not backwards, which, as said by others it is.

Apart from the season with Adam Murray when we battled relegation, and that utter dross that Flitcroft served up at the end of last season, the football on the pitch is going alright too

I can see the guy's frustration. I saw them at the end of the 2015-6 season and was told that they were changing the name to Barnsley Town so was a bit surprised that they were still Shaw Lane when we played them.

There is a parallel with AFC Mansfield and hopefully their success will carry on but I think their future would
be dubious if Andy Saunders quit.

I guess maybe different with SHaw Lane as they've only existed for a short time, but it was like when the Hull chairman wanted to call them Hull Tigers or something, then for me it's a no.

Wonder what our fans would be like if JR wanted to call us Mansfield Stags instead of Town?

If JR wants to continue pumping money in for the next quarter decade he can call us Aunt Rosie's Flowery Tuppence FC for all I care.

A very good name Tel. F.A.R.T FC for short.
We might win against Accrington next time, if we ever play them again.
