Steve Evans started off not being a big fan of Rhys Bennett and Krystian Pearce and insisted on signing Zander Diamond and David Mirfin who we did not really need. The money would have been better invested in our midfield and strikers. Steve Evans then agrees to Krystian Pearce and Mal Benning signing new deals but not Rhys Bennett at a time when he probably knew he was going to leave the Stags.

However Rhys leaving is our own fault because we should have sorted out a new contract for him in January. The longer you leave it then the more likely it is that players are going to be tapped up by someone else.

As bad as it is can’t see him being the only ex Mansfield player going there. Hopefully there won’t be but no player is bigger than the club. :mtfc:

Im not the real OND wrote:I always got the impression that Evans didn't particularly rate Bennett. He was bombed out for Mirfin and Diamond and only got a look in again after injuries/suspension, after which he cemented his place in the team. I suppose he's free to join whoever he wants but I'd imagine Evans will be offering a good whack of somebody else's money for him to sign so early on in the season.

How did he cement his place in Evans' team when Evans didn't rate him?
Anyway, I agree that he's able to perform at L1 level and hope he does well. As we weren't going to hold on to him anyway he may as well go to a team we're unlikely to play next season.
I seem to think that Flitcroft said that we only had one right back when he took over, so I guess he was already ignoring Bennett and Anderson, either of whom can cover that position quite well..

Might not be a bad thing, if he takes the high wage earners. If any are under contract and command a fee, we should price it as high as possible.

So who is the first to apologise to Flitcroft, you see you didn't know the full story, now you do.

Interesting that in the week that Steve Evans leaves Mansfield he signs-up Benning & Pearce to contract extensions, but surprisingly doesn't sign up Rhys Bennett. Then as soon as the transfer window opens he signs Bennett for Peterborough.

I don't blame Bennett. I don't even rate him that highly. (He wouldn't be in my top 10 Stags central defenders), and he is replaceable.
However, Steve Evans' actions once again are highly questionable.

from Friday's Flitcroft interview, the club took up the option to extend the contract by a year, and are negotiating to extend it on top of that.

There's no hope and Bob Hope of Cheltenham selling to Evans.

I'd have nothing but suspicion to fuel this, but I wonder if Evans didn't tap up Bennett right after he left?

Evans had every right to tap up Bennett after January 1st.

Players can sign a pre agreement following January 1st of the year their contract expires.

So Evans has not committed any footballing offence bht emphasised some folks low opinion of him.

That's football, however distasteful it may be.

Well said.
Some on here going on like Bennett was the latter day equivalent of Bobby Moore or even Kevin Bird. He was an above average League Two defender who now doesn't want to play for us.

As Windsor Davies once said "oh dear, how sad, never mind"
