We should have had him signed up on a longer contract but at the time JR was clearly having to cut his funding of the club via One Call and so was happy to take the cash.

His position in his 34 starts are ( according to Martin's reports)

Upfront in a striking pair = 21 plus 4 coming on as sub - made positive difference as sub twice
Role behind a front striking two = 2
Left attacking midfield = 4 plus 1 coming on as sub - made negative difference as sub once
Right attacking midfield = 7 plus 4 coming on as sub - made positive difference as sub once

So majority of his time he was a striker and as I said at the time and everyone poo pooed the idea when I said he was bought as Matt Green's replacement.

Games Sam started won 10 Drawn 10 Lost 14
Games Sam didn't play won 2, Drawn 3, Lost 3
Games Sam was on bench and played won 4, Drawn 3, Lost 2
(he made a positive difference to result of game in 3 games and a negative in 1 game, no difference to result in 5 games)
We might win against Accrington next time, if we ever play them again.

Thanks Pete. Great stats.

So the main problem was that we did not play him enough on the left where he had played at Hereford and where he thrived at Chesterfield. We should not have played him on the right

Can we blame this again on the failure to sign a couple of decent strikers which meant we ended up playing Sam Clucas up front far too much?

Has Sam Clucas now become more of a centre midfield player at Hull and Swansea?

Well done Pete. I think that the "Cox rarely played Clucas" and "OK he played him but mostly as sub" arguments have been dismissed.
Now we're on to the "played him out of position" one.

I might mention that Cox played Matt Green out of position a lot. He was a winger at Oxford.

Yes, Cox had to move him about a bit. But in the end, he had a great season with us and moved on upwards, so he clearly wasn't being held back and was effective. Perhaps the versatility helped his saleability.

Every club Clucas has ever played for, other than us, has either been relegated whilst he's played for them or in the season after he left, or in Hereford's case, wound up.
Controlled & Clueless. If this is the big life, well I ain't looking to live it.
