League 2 Playing Budgets

Postby Tippy Tappy Football » Fri Jan 26, 2018 11:47 pm

So it was said at our AGM that we are spending £2.5 million but Luton Town surely must have the largest playing budget in League 2. Chesterfield claim to have the third highest playing budget according to Ashley Carson.

This was also reported in an article in The Independent about Yeovil Town:

"That is why Way’s job is so difficult, trying to build a stable squad with one of the smallest budgets in League Two, just £1m. The richest teams in the division spend £2.5m but Yeovil’s budget should be more like £1.3m just to give themselves a chance. Even then relegation rivals like Chesterfield or Forest Green Rovers are thought to spend more than £1.5m each year."

I was told by a scout that nobody can compete or come close to Luton’s budget. IMO it must be well over £3 million.

Luton budget is huge, they have easily spent over half a million on fees alone.

I’d say Mansfield budget either second or third, probably with Coventry.

We all knew that was our budget. Our natural budget would be between 1m and 1.5m depending on cup runs etc, and its been well documented that JR has put a few million in, with a chunk being used for the training ground and the rest financing our push...

The majority of clubs in this division have very similar budgets, barring the few biggest budgets (Luton, then lower down Mansfield, Coventry) and the couple smallest (Stanley, Morecambe) I imagine most are near the 1.3/1.5 mark.

Paul Anderson is on £3,500 per week according to this video on You Tube.

I cannot understand why Swindon would pay massive salaries to two goalkeepers. Coventry's Jordan Turnbull has also joined Northampton Town.

There are also no Luton Town players mentioned and I would expect a few of them to be big earners.

A fan in the comments section claims O'Grady at Chesterfield is on £6,600 per week.

Jonathan Pearce, commentating on Notts' thumping at Swansea, said their budget was £2m and that there were other teams that had higher ones in League 2.

I'd guess it goes...

Luton
Mansfield
Swindon
Coventry
Notts
Lincoln

I think Carlisle probably have a decent budget too, but are underachieving.

well-researched that video is. Have Northampton been relegated while I've been asleep? And Swindon having two keepers on more than 3k. Yeah of course they have.

I agree with your comment on facebook Tippy that Luke Berry and James Collins must be in the Top 7.

click-bait to get people watching their video and earn hits on youtube. It's worked ;)

Seems to be a video put together by a young aspiring journalist from Yorkshire. "All figures taken from Football Manager 2018"!

As such, you may as well take notice of figures bandied about on here which also seem to be entirely guesswork.

So ultimately it's a waste of time.

Port Vale Chairman, Norman Smurthwaite, at a Fans Forum last week said that their playing budget was £1.6m. This was £350,000 higher than last season thanks to the fees received for Jak Alnwick and Anthony Grant in last January’s transfer window.

He estimated Port Vale's budget was in the top ten in League Two and possibly in the bottom four or five of League One. He also said Accrington Stanley’s budget was nearly half Port Vale’s.

Alan Hardy said on BBC Radio Florist on Saturday that Notts County had blown their budget already this season and it was £500,000 higher than last season when they had the 4th largest budget.

Should be fun for them in January if they get a load of injuries then.

The amount of raspberries he gave us last season. I hope it goes very, very wrong for them.

Alan Hardy has admitted that Notts County have a playing budget of £3 million which is unsustainable and higher than half the clubs in League 1.

https://www.nottinghampost.com/sport/fo ... 3m-2256413

Colchester Chairman, Robbie Cowling, has said that Colchester have the 12th largest budget in League 2 but are unlikely to recruit more players in January due to being knocked out of the Cup Competitions.

I liked the following quote: "“Everyone at the club works extremely hard to contribute to your matchday experience at Colchester United. All of which is great until you try to get out of the car park at the end of the game."
