Two great choses.
The Stags are for life, not just for cup finals. (or Liverpool).

George Foster and Kevin Bird.

A no brainier actually.
We might win against Accrington next time, if we ever play them again.

My Grandad would have voted for Stuart Boam but Big George and Kevin are in my personal "Best Stags XI".

Rod Arnold

Sandy Pate, George Foster, Kevin Bird, Barry Foster

Liam Lawrence, Gordon Hodgson, Paul Holland, Jim McCaffrey

Ray Clarke, Phil Stant

Subs: Kevin Hitchcock, Colin Foster, Paul Mathews, Keith Cassells and Dave Caldwell.

As good as George and Kevin were they were not the best center backs to pull on the Amber and Blue, IMO.

Boam, Saxby, McClelland etc much better players

Always will be a debate but I would have gone with Boam and Bird with Saxby close behind.

It is a good point: Boam, Saxby, McClelland? & Calderwood may have been technically better and they played at a higher level after playing for the Stags ....... but George & Kevin did (and achieved) far more for MTFC than the above candidates. So I think that they deserve the nod on that basis.

Good point Vice, providing we are judging on achievements rather than ability.

You are right mate, it was MacKenzie and Foster when I started going. Birdy rarely played CH

Bird was, no doubt, a central defender.

Bird played the 74/75 season (Div 4 title) and 75/76 season (before he got injured) at centre half.
He started the 76/77 season (Div 3 title) at centre half but moved to right back about a third of the way through the season, and continued there in the 77/78 season (our only season in the old Div 2).

You can read my profile of him here if you're interested ---> http://stagsnet.net/vintage/reports/kev ... rofile.htm
