Clive Walker followed by Barry Foster
Walker was class and never got the same mention as Sandy but Sandy Pate states this when u chat to him and he had many a game with him as the left side of the team.

Old Mr Sideboards himself.......Barry, Barry Foster, remember it echoing round FM when he broke his leg against Portsmouth.

I do think think that this sort of debate tends to heat up when the 'sexier' positions on the pitch come around ie wingers strikers, at the moment the Div 4 Champ side could be put in from 1-11 and no one could argue that much.

My vote would be for Barry Foster by a whisker from Clive Walker.

According to the Chad website, however, Mark Kearney is running away with it.

It's a difficult one. Clive Walker was an excellent left back and was an automatic choice. Barry Foster came in for Walker when he was injured and Walker couldn't get his place back. I think Walker left not long after that. Mark Kearney was an excellent player also.

Mark Kearney had two phases in his career with us: at first, he was brilliant, reliable and his 'Everton' quality shone through. But then suddenly he became 'jittery' ... very much like Steve Whitworth, who was an ex-England international, but looked low on confidence and needed an extra couple of touches to do the basics.
Kearney was good, initially, but I think Foster was a bit more solid defensively - over the whole of his career.
I was only about 8 years old when I saw Clive Walker's last season with us (and my first season of watching the Stags), so I'm not in a position to judge him fairly.
So, whilst all three would make the grade .... I'd still go for Barry 'sideburns' Foster. (By the way, has anyone got a photo of what he looks like now?)

He was on "An evening with ..." a year or two ago. I really enjoyed watching the video (I would guess that is still available)

Agreed, but he was a utility player who played in various positions including left back. But was he the best left back that we have ever had?

What was the name of the left back we sold to Arsenal who then suffered a career ending injury? I remember seeing him a few times and he really was quality.

do you mean Craig McKernon?

He was mainly a right back - he only played one full season, 88/89, with Kenworthy and then Kearney at left back. He played bits and pieces before that.

No it was definitely McKernon and as Martin says, he was a right back with big hair!

This is a tough one in my limited history. Don't think we have had an outstanding left back. I remember Laurence Wilson having a very good loan spell with us in 2006 but he also played as a left winger. Apart from this season I would probably have Benning down as one of the best I have seen, although it's not a position which was littered with quality. Pemberton and Eaton were decent.

I remember average to poor ones like Tankard, Vaughan, Jelleyman, Jeannin, Sandwith, Stonehouse, O'Hare, Talbot etc.

Tank was quality. Kept Pemberton out the team for the vast majority of the promotion season. Scored a crucial late winner/equaliser towards the back end of the season if I remember correctly too?

Didn't rate him. Pemberton definitely played more games than Tankard that season as well.
