Vote for your best ever Stags left back

Postby Chadman » Tue Nov 28, 2017 12:27 pm

With Rod Arnold in goal and Sandy Pate at right back - two of the easier decisions - we now look at the left back slot. Who would you deem to be the best ever Stags have had? Please vote here . . .

If Mal had kept up to the standards he set when he first arrived I'd have put him in with a shout, but his cruciate injury seems to have affected him somewhat as he's not as dynamic as before.
Bazz was ultra solid in a great team but lacked adventure I'd say.

It's a poser, I'll have to think some more.

Kevin sandwith... I think he started there before being moved inside?... Maybe not... we’ve not been blessed with great left backs in my time, even in the Lawrence, Greenacre etc days. So another one for the older generation to fill?

Quality player (Eaton) but can’t make him best ever due to the reason you’ve said. I think injury has tainted the opinion of Mal as well to answer an earlier question. Best we’ve had at least since going down to the conference and coming back and I think he’d be on another level if he hadn’t have had those injuries. Still time I guess?

Surprised no one has mentioned Clive Walker. He was a really good full back defensively and attacking.

Seen all of the above and my vote goes to Baraclough.

Athletic, good defensively and dynamite going forward.

Plus, he scored the best goal of all time at Field Mill.

That’s good enough for me.

As I go back many years it has to be Barry Foster or Clive Walker.

The one and only ......... and he also had the best sideburns ever sported by a Stags player ..... (My dad used to call him 'rubber legs') .....
Barry Foster!

I sense that we are recreating the great Dave Smith team from the 70's here. Goal keeper & full back sorted. Now for the the central defenders!....

Baraclough for me.

Am I right in thinking that Steve Harper was initially signed as a striker? I'm sure he came here and had a few games up front, then for whatever reason he ended up playing like a left wing back?
