Magic Sponge Podcast

Postby MTFCMusings » Thu Nov 02, 2017 12:40 pm

A podcast with Rob Beckett, Jimmy Bullard and Ian Smith, and a footballing guest each week. They basically just recount stories from their playing career.

New series began this week, the guest was David Nobble, who played under Steve Evans at Boston and Rotherham. He talks about Evans from 34 minutes until the end, for anyone interested.

Just had a listen.

1) Bullard is a raspberry.
2) Evans is an even bigger raspberry.
3) No wonder we aren't scoring many free kicks
The Stags are for life, not just for cup finals. (or Liverpool).

I do enjoy them, some of Graham Stack's stories are unbelievable.

Jamie Hand is also a guest on one and tells a story about his time here.

Other podcast mentions for Not The Top 20 (all about the football league), Flintoff, Savage and Syed, and Quickly Kevin (90s football podcast)

It's not really football related. I thought the same before listening but he comes across more likeable.

Seriously you will change your mind even a little bit after listening to Flintoff Savage & the ping pong guy. Some truly brilliant topics covered and it is hilarious. My mother in law doesn't know much about sport yet she loves listening to it.

the season Noble talks about at Rotherham, Rotherham got promoted. And then promoted again the following season. You'd have thought Noble might have mentioned that. Then again, a player who goes and signs for a manager he can't stand, maybe not.

Ben Smith's book gives a more interesting insight I think. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Journeyman-ody ... 1849548544

He clearly had no other options at the time.

The Gazza story was funny though, and a lot of his comments echo those made by Ben Smith in The Journeyman.

Judging by nobles comments I thought they had a poor season but he obviously did not like evans at all. Mind you, a lot of people don't but he knows how to get promotion. He sounded a bit of a dick to be honest and sounds like his heart wasnt really in the game when he said he had no other offers so went to rotherham in the end

I wonder if he mentions rotherham all the time to the players in training

I assume in the Jamie Hand episode he's referring to Mez as having to clean up for him every day?
Explains why he didn't play much for us

Was he one of many Reg signings, or was it Coxy? Can't remember much of him to be honest, but I have tried to blank a lot of the Conference years out now....there were some shocking players and moments that we had to endure.
