Can Stags finish in the TOP 3

Postby KirkbyStag2 » Sun Oct 15, 2017 7:11 pm

I'm assuming 81 points will achieve automatic promotion (top 3)

Current Table,

PLD........W........D.......L.......PTS
13...........5.........4........4........19

Required, for 81 points total,

PLD.......W.......D.......L.........PTS
33.........20.......2.......11........62
33.........19.......5........9.........62
33.........18.......8........7.........62 :D
33.........17......11.......5.........62
33.........16......14.......3.........62
33.........15......17.......1.........62

We've currently got 1.46 points per game, where as we need 1.76 PPG over 46 games, therefore we now need 1.88 PPG for the remaining 33 games (Steve Evans recently referred to 2.0 PPG gets you promoted)

Last season, Steve Evans games achieved 1.56 PPG.

On the showing of the first quarter of the season I'd 95% say not a chance.
I don't think we're good enough for the play offs either.

However, I'm willing to hope that fortunes could be altered. The squad ought to be plenty capable.

Of course we can. In our promotion campaign from non league we were crap up until christmas time, after that we tore the league apart. No reason why that can’t happen again. All to play for still

Judging by the first quarter, we clearly aren't good enough for the top 3 and we could struggle to even make the play-offs.
Before this season began, whilst many were swept up in the hype that we were the favourites to win the league, I was quietly thinking that this season could be the toughest league 2 ever. There are about 12 clubs with realistic promotion aspirations, the same as us. I was concerned that we lacked both a midfield general and a talismanic striker, but I believed that our defence would be very strong - and that would make the difference.
Pre-season, I predicted that we would finish 8th. I didn't expect Newport, Accrington & Stevenage to be up there. My tip for the top 3 were: Luton, Coventry & Swindon - although the likes of Exeter & Wycombe were also likely to be up there.
I didn't expect us to have a weaker team than last season, but I am wondering if the first eleven is actually weaker than last season? (Certainly defensively we are, which is ironic as that is an area that had been supposedly strengthened). Evans said last season that we 'lacked that bit of quality in the final third' - well that's still the case, but more alarmingly we seem to have a weak midfield & a leaky defence at the moment.
I am still hoping that we can make the play-offs - but I can't see us finishing in the top 3 this season.

Play offs an outside chance but never top 3 in a million years too far behind both in points and performances

On paper we have a all the capabilities. Not knowing the best 11 is our main issue here. As it stands we cant but confident they'll turn it around

If SE keeps getting distracted by these job offers no chance. If he says he is committed to us this season I think we will make the play offs. I also think if he does leave in the near future we will still make the play offs under the new manager. Top three? No chance.

That's not going to happen without our club/JR shelling out 500k so I doubt it

Hell yes we can.
All it takes is a little run of results to be back in there.

At this present moment I fail to see where this side will get 'a little run of results' from.

And if they do they need to keep if going to some extent otherwise it'll be back down to mid table where we lie now.
The top 3 are eight points (3 wins) clear of us now which is a lot. They aren't top 3 for nothing. They'll more than likely keep on picking up point on a 2ppg basis, we have to match that ppg and indeed better it to catch them, and I can't see it.

With what I’ve seen so far, mid table obscurity.

I don't think that's the main problem. I think we need a settled team and better tactics. Danny Rose has seven goals already this season. He is well on course for 20 plus, yet we are still outside the playoffs.

Love to see Danny get to 20 and injury free I think he will. You’re right about tactics, SE surprisingly looks lacking here given his experience. Of course a settled team will help, I hope the couple of players he says he wants in January doesn’t escalate into 6 or 7 or we’ll never get one.

It’s achievable but looking less likely by the week. I was optimistic at the start of the season, I think the players signed justified the hype and initially we were performing but not picking up the points. Performances have dropped off quite shockingly and with the competitive nature of the league we’re all on a bit of a downer.
I think it’s a case of the old cliche of back to basics and hope results pick up. They need to sharpish for top 3 and can’t wait much longer to keep up with the playoffs either.

Play offs best hope now too far behind the bigger boys and Luton will be well gone with County.

More importantly, can Chesterfailed finish in the bottom 2?

They're trying their best, we need to give them all plenty of support in their quest by taking 6 points off them.
