Best ever Stags keeper?

Postby Chadman » Wed Oct 11, 2017 2:00 pm

A tough one when you look at the standard and loyalty of so many down the years and many tend to favour ones they have seen live and been their heroes . . .

The question should be "After Rod Arnold, who was Stag's best keeper?"

In my life time, Ian Bowling or Pilko.

After Rod I would say Darren Ward and Kevin H. I've no doubt had Rod been 6 inches taller he would have spent his career in the top Division

Rod Arnold . No one since has come close . All the different defenders that played in front off him and he kept up the high standard throughout . None of this getting to gel nonesense.

Too young to have seen Arnold. Best one for me is Darren Ward in my life time.

I go back as far as "the flying pig", Colin Treharne, but Rod Arnold has been the best so far, by a country mile. But memories of individual glories rank high amongst the perks of being a fan, so Kevin Hitchcock's saves at Wembley, and Alan Marriott's goal against Wrexham deserve special mention.

How do we rate "best", because Dave Hollins was a full international keeper whilst with us, with Wales?

Dave Hollins for me in terms of talent. He had a thigh injury for quite some time of his stay with us but could still kick and THROW the ball further than anyone else. Started some magnificent attacking moves with his quick and accurate throws out. I think that is what makes him the tops for me. Pity no one does that these days.

Treherne was the first keeper I saw as a kid, so he was great!
On balance think Hollins just pips Arnold for me.
Perhaps Hitchcock for his Wembley display so I'd put him third.

I don't think Dave Hollins played for Wales whilst he was with us. I always thought John McLelland was the the first active Stag to play international football when he came on for Northern Ireland I believe at Wembley. Dave Hollins was John Hollins who played for England.
