The Quarterly Review

Postby MTFCMusings » Wed Oct 11, 2017 8:35 am

Given the Stags have now played over a quarter of this seasons games, I have reviewed each players performance so far and given them a school-type grade

Thanks again to Dan and Kirkby Stag for the photo's.

Thoughts welcome.

Cheers

No mark for the manager? A lot of players have 'low grades' with the comment that they 'may suit a different system'.

Only one I raised an eyebrow at was Mirfin getting a higher grade than Pearce. Both are at the same level for me.

Agree with most of the others. Byrom is a big loss for us.

Good read, thanks.
The Stags are for life, not just for cup finals. (or Liverpool).

I did consider doing a grade for the manager but with all the talk about him over the last few days I decided to focus purely on the players. If I was to give a mark for Evans so far if would be on the border between D and E.

I would agree re Pearce and Mirfin on the whole but Pearce has made a couple more errors leading to goals. You could also say he has more assists, which is true, but as his primary job is as a defender that is what swung it. Pearce is borderline A though I agree.

Thanks for your comments.

Here are the fans average scores from Eggy's surveys. ( Does not yet include the Colchester game).

Only includes scores when player starts a game.

7.50 Rose D (S) Musing rating - A
7.32 Pearce (D) Musing rating - B
7.30 McDonald (M) Musing rating - B
7.11 Murfin (D) Musing rating - A
7.07 Anderson (M) Musing rating - D
6.99 Diamond (D) Musing rating - U
6.97 Potter (M) Musing rating - C
6.86 White (D) Musing rating - C
6.82 Byrom (M) Musing rating - A
6.74 Hunt (D) Musing rating - B
6.72 Mellis (M) Musing rating - C
6.66 Benning (D) Musing rating - D
6.64 Olejnik (G) Musing rating - U
6.56 Angol (S) Musing rating - C
6.48 Butcher (M) Musing rating - E
6.48 Atkinson (M) Musing rating - D
6.46 Sterling-James (S) Musing rating - C
6.43 Logan (G) Musing rating - C
6.41 Hemmings (S) Musing rating - F
6.38 Bennett (D) Musing rating - D
6.30 Spencer (S) Musing rating - U
6.27 Digby (M) Musing rating - D
6.10 Taft (D)
6.06 Hamilton (M) Musing rating - U
5.84 Thomas (M)

So looks like fans underrate Byrom and Hunt and over rate Anderson according to Musings.
We might win against Accrington next time.

Thanks Pete. I expected the Anderson difference. I think most fans are won over by his work rate and the fact he seems a very nice chap off the pitch. I'm not sure he has delivered on it as of yet, particularly as I expect he is one of the highest earners.

Krystian Pearce should be an A. I would rank him above David Mirfin.

See my explanation above for the decision on that.

Most of the reason for doing the blog was to generate debate so I welcome your thoughts and wouldn't put up too much of an argument.

David Mirfin was disappointing in his first two games and was to blame for the first goal at Crewe. He also looked very exposed against Rochdale when attackers were running at him. He has been excellent though since he came back into the team against Luton.
