Lithuania, interestingly, that great socialist Bono owns a shopping mall there.

According to the "paradise papers".

Some people are more equal than others it seems?

Much as I detest the sanctemoniius strawberry, as he's a citizen of the Republic of Ireland and not the UK, he's not really our problem.

Not one of your better posts, ows.

The Paradise Papers do indeed show that Bono has used tax avoidance devices to minimise his tax bill in relation to his investment as part owner in the Lithuanian shopping mall. But he's used tax avoidance measures on other occasions and feels it is ok to do so as he says he still pays huge amounts of tax. I'm not defending him - merely repeating what he has done and said.

You state in your opening line that Bono is a "great socialist". Can you provide some factual evidence to substantiate your statement, please?

You then go on to paraphrase a quote from Orwell's "1984". Orwell was indeed a socialist. But he despised the brutal and corrupt Stalinist regimes of the Soviet Union. So your attempted socialist/communist/hypocrite link is misguided and inaccurate on this occasion.

As far as I am aware Bono is politically diverse and will use politics to advance his causes and beliefs. He doesn't have any party political affiliation but has been praised and honoured worldwide for his philanthropy. However, many of his fellow countrymen (and women) view him and his wife as a holier than thou serial tax avoiders.

To conclude.

Bono is a tax avoider? Certainly.

Bono is a socialist cum communist? I think not.

Over to you.

Hi Wilf,
Good to hear from you, yes Orwell did despise the brutal russian socialism and he was right to do so.
Back in the 1920s there were other well known British people who supported armed revolution in this country. George Bernard Shaw supported a British armed revolution, as did Labour founder Kier Hardy, George Lansbury and Ramsey McDonald to name but three who were supported by russian plundered gold. Lansbury set up the Daily Herald using russian finance.

fantastic news a face lift for the stadium and quarry lane, hopefully also a money earner for JR and the club with more visitors to the area.

looks like they're flattening the whole plot and lowering the stadium from that image.

I'd really like the hotel to be on the Bishop St side, buy up all the houses and completely redevelop that side with the hotel and a new stand - wishful thinking I fear, but that's the side that needs it and it would have more room if they could buy the houses, plus it makes the hotel closer to the town centre and on the ring road.

I heard that the council was supposed to be buying all the houses on Bishop street & area for redevelopment. Not sure how true it is .

I completely agree with this.

Having the hotel that side would be front facing towards town as you said and will create additional parking which the hotel will need as well as the usual parking behind the QLE. The hotel can join on to a new Bishop Street stand (no longer called Bishop street stand of course) and incorporate matchday hospitality suites.

If the row of terraced houses that were in Pleasley can be purchased, residents moved and flattened for development then surely Bishop and Lord street can. They're a blight on the area and I'd imagine even the residents themselves would welcome a move to a better area.

While we're on the subject of Council bashing, here's a nice easy one - written statement on intervention in local plans - http://www.parliament.uk/business/publi ... 6/HLWS253/

The Sec of State is considering intervening in these authorities - Basildon, Brentwood, Bolsover, Calderdale, Castle Point, Eastleigh, Liverpool, Mansfield, North East Derbyshire, Northumberland, Runnymede, St Albans, Thanet, Wirral and York

This essentially means that the Local Authority has failed in preparing a sound Local Plan - meaning that the Council do not currently have a strategy for growth. Gives the Council very little credibility should JRs hotel application be refused, and it goes to appeal.
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.
