Agree with you both. Newcastle sold him to The Stags because of his alleged lack of pace. But one of the finest readers of the game and distributor of a ball it has ever been my pleasure to watch.

Sadly, he died in his forties.

The kid has been absolutely on fire for the Wednesday kids and at International youth level.
We've got them in a friendly coming up, so why not bend the ear of Carvalhal whilst here?

Son of David Hirst, looks to be a chip off the old block.

There doesn't seem to be much value around for strikers, so a loan deal for a young lad higer up the ladder seems the most likely. This is the best I could find using that sort of criteria.
A good find Rob, but with Allen's and Carson's connections to Wednesday I would think it is more likely he would go to Cheaterfield.

Not sure Dave Allen is popular at Sheffield Wednesday at all with how he left.
Certainly not with the fans, but not sure how he is viewed by the hierarchy.

He did indeed Edders. In 1999 at the age of 46.

My next door neighbour and good friend for many years.

Better than me at football and could drink me under the table. Luckily for me 'Odgy restricted his drinking before match days during the season. But I was under the table quite a lot after the season ended.

Very fond memories of a lovely bloke and a talented footballer.

Could read a game better than any other stag in my 50+ years of watching the lads. Every time he took a corner, felt we would score. Definetly a game changer.

We were blessed in the mid to late 70s with the players we had. Hodgy was a terrific player. He was the Pirlo of our team.

Thanks very much Martin for adding.
Great read and memory
At this heady time of change and progress its nice to recall our old warriors when resources were much more scarce and almost non existent compared to today and the match against Spurs is a classic to watch with Hodgy and the others and we may never see the likes of that type of game again...or maybe with SE... we will.
In Hodgy we used to trust.

Hodgson is the best Stags player I have seen, Caldwell was my favourite, but Hodgson the best. It was clearly no coincidence that his presence saw the best years in our entire history.

Dave Cauldwell. Remember a game at Reading. They kicked off and 20 seconds latter he knutted their player and off. Must of been raining. Never looked interested when it was cold or wet. Bit of sun on his back and the lad could play a bit.

Much as I love reading about these players form 30/40 years ago perhaps the incoming rumours thread is not the place to post about them

Well said that man i grew up following the Stags from 1974 memories of Scunthorpe being torn apart on that night of 7 nil n having the greatest memory of that night standing on the QLE watching / listening to a packed North Stand in full voice.
