Can Stags make this seasons Play-Offs ?

Postby KirkbyStag2 » Mon Jan 23, 2017 11:47 pm

If 71 points is enough we would need 34 points from 19 games (1.7 points per game, which over a season is automatic promotion form).

PLD.........W..........D.........L.........PTS
19............11.........1.........7...........34.
19............10.........4.........5...........34. :D
19.............9.........7..........3...........34.
19.............8........10.........1...........34.

We've got 18 points from 11 games (1.64 average) since Evans arrived. Anything is possible - until its not.

These next signings could well be the defining factor. We could well do it but let's not start booing the team/manager if we don't.

Evans' latest interview is fantastic, he says that if we can break into the playoff pack then he has no doubt he'll get us promoted.

I still think we're two quality players short.

Like I said on another post the target should be 3rd place to Chase down Carlisle 11 points ahead is as easy when we chased down Kidderminster for the title....

Another factor to consider is how quiet Norman is kept. If we don't see another post from him/her for the rest of then season then it'll mean it's going well. I suppose we can't afford to lose many. The unbeaten run we have needs to be kept going. A Cox 12 out of 12 type run would put the heebygeebies up everyone :D

Kidderminster finished that season better than us, they won 9 and drew 1 of the last 10 games and only dropped 11 points from their last 29 games (P29 W25 D1 L3). Luckily they only gained 17 points from their first 17 games and actually lost their first five. Their season would have been incredible if we had not also had a brilliant finishing record of P28 W23 D0 L5.
Both teams came from nowhere and literally flew past the leading pack around March time. If ever the top two deserved automatic promotion then this was the season.

The simple fact is that it needs to be Mansfield Town FC that go on a cracking run to the end of the season and not someone else.
With Steve Evans in charge this is more possible than ever before. Get ready for the ride.
He who laughs last clearly didn't get it...

We need a run, but we also need our promotion push competitors to falter a little bit.

3rd place should be our target.
You've got to go there and come back, to know where you've been.

Interestingly, 7 of our last 11 games are against the current Top 7, so it's going to be difficult. However, I've invested in the 20/1 currently being offered for us to be promoted.

I think some are getting a bit carried away, I'm still not sure we will be consistent enough.

Hope I'm wrong, and I put a tenner on promotion at 25/1 when Evans was appointed!!

3 points off the play-offs, it is very do-able indeed.

Its a tight league and lot of clubs in the mix, I would say we would need about 4 wins back to back to get up there but I feel, although I have every faith in team and SE that its a 'bridge too far' this season and a few teams have games in hand as well.

I would be happy to be up or near there and then go automatic next time if it does not work out but who knows we could do it and why not chase the dream and JR and Carolyn would deserve it more than any of us.

I think we can comfortably get ourselves into the playoffs but 3rd place is going to need a serious run of form so, realistically, a bit out of reach this season.

If Carlisle carry on with the same points per game that they have done so far, they will end on 82 points. 3rd place in the last two seasons has been 85 points.

We've got 37 points, with 57 points left to play for, so getting 82 -85 points would need us to pick up 45-48 points out of 57 (W15 L4 / W16 L3 :o ).

Never say never until it's mathematically impossible though, and hopefully a few teams around 3rd place will slip up along the way.

Playoffs - definitely achievable for any team 3 points off with 19 games left, all to play for of course. The difficulty for us comes from the fact there's a bunch of 10 or so teams who will be saying the same. Between now and March is our chance to shine and firmly put ourselves in there with the Wycombes and Lutons, especially as the majority of games are against teams lower down the table. March to season end is where we play the teams in and around us so we need to get ahead and position ourselves strongly to allow for points to be dropped in the run up to the end of the season. All that said I am confident we can keep a run going in the short term and get ourselves in there by the end of the Hartlepool game, and then do enough to put us in there in for the final, tough, run in.

Automatic - we'll have run out of games in my opinion. Donny and Plymouth will roughly match or better our results until the end of the season, and it would take a massive downturn in fortunes for us to beat Carlisle, Wycombe or Pompey's end of season points tally, regardless of how well we do.

I think it depends if SE is successful in bringing his first choice players, and how well other clubs in our league strengthen. Barnet for one, seem to be bringing in better players.
