Best ever Stags goals

Postby Chadman » Thu Jan 05, 2017 11:34 am

The legendary Tim Morriss is putting together a series of articles for the Chad web site on the best ever goals scored by the Stags down the years and we wondered which ones you feel should be in there.

I have thrown in the Chris Greenacre wonder strike from the halfway line at Cheltenham.

Any suggestions folks?

Mark Blake, who personally I never rated, scored a cracker the week after at Barnet - I think I was sat with Richmond Stag directly behind the goal, we had a cracking view.

Mark Kearneys free kick, can't remember who it was against (Halifax?) but I think all who were there will know the one I mean.

One of my personal favourites was Wayne Corden's cracker against County, he scored a few the same, cutting in from the left and curling it in with his right foot.

I'm sure there are plenty more and I think Benning's recent few are worthy of mention too, especially the one at Daggers.

Add to the Greenacre collection the rocket against Rotherham at Millmoor and the stoppage time bicycle kick against Shrewsbury on a Friday night.

Steve Wilkinson against Burnley at Turf Moor in the 91/92 season, great link up play between Stanty & Wilko and an excellent finish.

Paul Holland from the same season away against the Sheep.

Scott Sellars away against Luton in the 01/02 promotion season, chip-alicious.

I seem to remember Cyril L'Gooooooossshh (might want to query the spelling) spanking in a fab goal during his brief spell with us.

Easily the best was scored by defender Simon Coleman at field mill on a foggy night versus Northampton I think. He beat 4 or 5 players from inside his own half and scored. Not seen one better and that includes premier league!!!

There's loads, maybe not the most technical goal but the one that gave me the biggest orgasm was George Fosters goal against Wigan in the FRT

Not for the quality of the goal, more for getting one over the raspberry; Lawrence's injury time winner at Saltergate in 2003 after Bradley got sent off.

Ian Baraclough's free kick from near the half way line in the 7-1 drubbing of Hereford on Boxing Day in 1994. Shooooooooot!

Might not be the best technical goals but the two in the relegation season - Iyesden away at Notts in the 9999th minute (50 yards offside) and Liam away at the raspberry late on will always be two of my favourite goals watching the Stags. I still get out of breath thinking about those celebrations!

George Foster FRT might not be the 'best', but in the context of the game, and the potential prize, it has to be up there as one the greatest.
Wayne Corden vs Hartlepool to take us 4-3 up (having been 3-1 down)
Baraclough in the 7-1 vs Hereford

That long range one by Cyril l Helgouch (something like that) was pretty good. My favourites in recent years are the two by Benning last season.

Hells bells, just checked thinking Cyril was about 10ish years ago and it was 98-99!!!

Baraclough against Hereford
Mal last year against Newport at home and Exeter away
Chapman against County and at home against Grimsby in the conference (The roof nearly came off)
Not a great goal but Richie Barkers late winner against Rotherham in the cup sparked an atmosphere I've rarely witnessed
For sheer importance Matt Green against Hereford and Wrexham

I was going to put that and then couldn't remember if it really happened! He had a spell shortly after playing up front didn't he? Noel Luke scored a similar goal, again no-one in the North could really see it cos it was in the QLE and it was a typical foggy Tues night. Ahh, happy times, I liked Noel Luke.

That Mal Benning goal against Newport is my favourite, with both the build-up and final pass and shot being top-notch. I'd also vote for the Baraclough super strike.
