After losing at Carlisle to a 5-2 scoreline a little more than a week ago, the Stags travel to Carlisle again. But this time around it will be for a Checkatrade Trophy fixture.
While the Stags won two of their group fixtures, both of them on the road, at Port Vale and Derby County U 21 respectively, the Cumbrians won all their group fixtures, Oldham away, them against Blackburn Rovers U 21 and Fleetwood at Brunton Park.
But the Stags as well as Carlisle are already out of the FA Cup. While the Stags were kayoed in the first round, the Cumbrians were dumped out by League One Rochdale, who now face the prospect of travelling to Barrow, now managed by Paul Cox, in the third round.
In that round way back in the 1980-81 campaign, the Stags played Carlisle most recently in the FA Cup. Then, Carlisle needed a replay at headquarters to go through to a 2-1 scoreline after the first tie had been dead-locked as the Stags and the Cumbrians shared four goals at Field Mill.
Five seasons earlier, the sides faced each other in the FA Cup for the very first time. Then, the Stags were on the way to their first-ever League Championship in the then Fourth Division, while Carlisle played a surprise campaign at the highest level. Despite a few very good results, i.e. taking four points off Everton, three off Derby to name a few, Carlisle were relegated to the second tier. Carlisle, who went through by winning 1-0 in the fifth round of the FA Cup, were two seasons later to swap places with the Stags in the FL pyramid as the Cumbrians dropped down to the third level during the 1976-77 campaign in which the Stags clinched the third division title above more-fancied sides as Brighton and Crystal Palace.
Below are the previous cup games between the Stags and the Cumbrians, all in the FA Cup:
1974-75 1-2 1975-02-15 (at Field Mill) 5th round
1980-81 2-2 1981-01-03 (at Field Mill) 3rd round
1980-81 1-2 1981-01-06 (at Brunton Park) 3rd round replay
A stern test is on the cards. But how much will the line-ups of both sides differ compared to the League Two ones a little more than a week ago? Come on Mansfield!
