I know there is a massive problem not supporting green upfront. But I think the protective player(s) is causing more problems with the defence than a little.

When a ball is played in between the defence and the protective player(s) no one knows who is responsible for clearing the ball and 3 or 4 players are taken out of the game so the opposition can walk through the defence.

Also the protective play reduces the number of players available to go forward. This results in the forward play being very narrow, once the ball has been given away the opposition get the ball wide go around the midfield and drop the ball in between the defence and protective player(s).
