Luton was a team that faced the Stags in their very first league season way back in 1931-32. And the first games between the teams took place over Easter 1932. An Good Friday 1932, Luton won at home 3-1 and in the return fixture at the Mill three days later the Mighty Stags won 5-2 and recorded their first-ever league hat trick through Harry Johnson (details courtesy of Paul Taylor in the vintage stags section). This was to be the biggest victory margin between the teams until November 3, 2001, last season when the Stags and Luton fought out the 2nd position before Luton got on to their all-time league record winning streak, twelve consecutive games including the 5-3 on April 1, 2002. In the sixties the teams played together in four seasons of the old third and the Stags also met Luton in their only season in the old 2nd division in 1977-78. On November 12, 1977, the Stags won 3-1 and at Luton about a month later, the teams drew 1-1. John Aston played for both sides during that season, starting at Luton before being transferred to the Stags early September and wore the Stags shirt in the 1-1 game at the Hatters. In fact, the Stags have scored in EVERY league game at Kenilworth Road as shown in the stats below and in all but one – the only goal-less game on April 20, 1970 in the old div 3 – home game so far. And Luton have NEVER won at Field Mill and were beaten 3-2 at Kenilworth Road earlier this season ending a run of five consecutive league defeats with a score of 1-19 courtesy of goals by Lawrence, Sellars and Christie – being 3-0 up when five minutes remained. And last season Luton were stuffed 4-1 at the Mill.
