We are pleased to announce the signing of Sheffield Wednesday goalkeeper Jake Kean, who has joined the club on loan until the end of the season.

The Derby-born ‘keeper joined Wednesday at the start of this season and joins the Stags as he looks to get minutes under his belt in a competitive environment.

The 25-year-old shot-stopper began his professional career at Blackburn Rovers after progressing through the young ranks at hometown club Derby County.

Whilst with Rovers, Kean had loan spells with Hartlepool United, Rochdale, Yeovil and Oldham Athletic.

After his loan was cut short at Rochdale due to an injury to Blackburn ‘keeper Paul Robinson, Kean returned to the club and made his Premier League debut away to Chelsea in a 2-1 defeat.

Following Rovers’ relegation to The Championship in 2012, Kean was first-choice shot-stopper for the following season and played a crucial part in Blackburn’s shock 1-0 FA Cup victory over Arsenal.

The Derby-born 'keeper was released at the end of the 2014/15 season and signed a two-year contract with Premier League new-boys Norwich City.

However, Kean didn’t make an appearance for the Canaries with manager Alex Neil sticking with his long-standing number one John Ruddy and subsequently went out on loan to Colchester and Swindon, respectively.

Kean terminated his contract with Norwich by mutual consent last summer and joined South Yorkshire club Sheffield Wednesday.

Since joining the Owls in July 2016, Kean has been understudy to Keiren Westwood, who was yesterday named in the EFL’s Team of the Year for 2016.

Stags' boss Steve Evans says the signing of Kean will provide competition for fellow goalkeepers Scott Shearer and Brian Jensen.

"I think when we came in it was important for all of us that we increased competition in all areas of the pitch.

"We have to be ruthless in our recruitment and making sure we’re doing that. I heard that Jake Kean was coming out on loan and was talking to four or five clubs in League One if I’m being honest and I tried to sign him before, back in my Rotherham days.

"So we kept looking at his performance and I went up recently to watch him in an under 23 game against Leeds United in which he was outstanding and impeccable in everything he did, so that made it easy."

The loan deal is subject to EFL approval.
