Liam Lawrence: It was my worst day playing

Shrewsbury Town captain Liam Lawrence admitted Saturday’s 7-1 humiliation at Chesterfield was his worst day in football - as he quashed rumours of his exit.

The 34-year-old has played more than 500 senior games in a career that has seen him feature for Sunderland, Stoke and Portsmouth.

He said: "It was probably my worst day in football, results-wise. I’ve never been beaten in a game where my team has conceded seven. I don’t think I’ve ever had a six, so to lose 7-1 hurts.

Lawrence, who is out of contract in the summer, has been linked with a move this month, with speculation suggesting he could be heading to his first club Mansfield as player-coach.

But he said: “Some of the rumours I hear coming out of Shrewsbury are ridiculous, believe me - and not just football ones, at times.

“They’re laughable. It doesn’t surprise me what’s said but I’m still here playing for Shrewsbury and I’m still captain so, unless someone says otherwise, that will be the case.”

As regards to Mansfield, he said: “It’s ridiculous. There’s nothing in it and I’m quite honest. If there was something in it, I’d give you half a clue, but there just isn’t anything there.”
