Injured Liam Hearn is likely to miss the rest of Mansfield Town’s season.
Hearn looked sharp during pre-season, but had his season ended early after he suffered a cartilage injury in the Capital One Cup defeat at Sheffield United.
It is an injury that has cost Stags dear as Mansfield struggle to find the back of the net.
So far they have scored just 16 goals, the second lowest in League Two.
Boss Adam Murray said: “Liam Hearn has been working his socks off and can’t do any more than he is doing.
“If we get him back before the end of the season it would be brilliant.
“At this stage it does not look likely that he will be in a position to train properly until the back end of the season.
“We are not going to rush him back, it is not a risk we would take and is not fair to the player.”
Hearn scored twice on his Stags debut in pre-season action against Leeds United.
The former Alfreton Town hitman has suffered an injury nightmare ever since he ruptured his achilles during a training session while playing for Grimsby Town in August 2012.
Hearn, who was Grimsby’s topscorer during the 2011/12 season with 29 goals, was then hit with another major setback when he injured cruciate ligaments during a match against Barnet in November 2013.
