STATISTICAL LOOK AT THE STAGS V ALEX CLASH
31/December/2002 17:22:17

Crewe is yet another club that first met the Stags in their early league days back in the 30's. And the first-ever league meeting at the Mill ended in a 4-0-win on September 24, 1932, that was reversed heavily on February 4, 1933 at Gresty Road, where Crewe won 7-0, the biggest-ever win margin between the two teams. The Stags' biggest victory against Crewe so far is a 6-0 on December 25, 1953, and on only four occasions have the Stags failed to net against the Railwaymen in a home league game, the latest also being the biggest home Stags defeat, a 0-5 after a poor stags display on August 31. The highest scoring game was a home Crewe 6-4 win on April 27, 1957. The teams were promoted together to the old div 3 in 1962-63 and faced each other in the opening game of the 1963-64 season on August 24, 1963, when the Stags won 2-1 at home but Crewe took revenge by winning their home game on December 14, 1963 3-2. And the clubs were also relegated together at the end of the 1990-91 season when the clubs met in the final game of the season at Crewe, who went out 3-0 winners. After the 4-0 away win at Crewe on December 16, 1972, the Stags failed to win away until August 24, 1974. From that season onwards, the Stags won five consecutive away games at Crewe. The latest Stags league victory at Gresty Road was a 2-1 on September 13, 1991, Stags goals by Phil Stant and a Steve Charles penalty, Tony Naylor replying for the Railwaymen.

And in the FA Cup, the teams now have met twice. This happened in the 2nd round on December 2, 1995 at Gresty Road, where Crewe won 2-0 and in the same round only a few weeks ago in Keith Curle's first game in charge, Crewe won 3-0. And in October, Crewe won a LDV Vans Trophy game 4-0 at the Mill, so the game on New Year's Day will be the fourth encounter between the Stags and the Railwaymen this season!! Stats updated with the home league game.

Played for both sides: John Moore, Colin Little (loan from Crewe), Andy White (loan to Crewe), Darren Rowbotham (for Stags on loan), Steve Wilkinson (for Crewe on loan before coming to the Stags).
