MANSFIELD Town may currently be languishing in the BSP after losing their Football League status, but that lowly position does not tell the full tale of this proud club.

Everyone, of course, remembers Stags' famous Wembley penalty shoot-out win over Bristol City to lift the Freight Rover Trophy back in 1987 - arguably the most famous day in the Field Mill Club's long history.

But there have been many other matches worth remembering.

And in his new book, Mansfield Town's Most Memorable Matches, Chad sports reporter Stephen Thirkill takes a nostalgic trip to memory lane to remember 25 of the club's most memorable games.

Stephen has trawled through the Chad archives to capture the tears and pain and the joy and passion of some of the club's most unforgettable games in the words of the men who played in the matches and the fans who were there.

Starting way back in 1932 with the 9-2 win over Rotherham United, Mansfield Town's Most Memorable Matches charts the epic promotion and relegation battles and cup giantkilling acts of the 1960's and 1970's to finish with the sad day when defeat by Rotherham in 2008 condemned Stags to Football League relegation.

Said Stephen: “Since starting work for the Chad in January 2004, I have been lucky enough to cover Mansfield Town in the absence of sports editor John Lomas on many occassions.

“Travelling up and down the country following Stags has been an experience that I have loved every minute of and one which I consider myself very fortunate to have sampled.

“During this period I have experienced many memorable matches and moments and, although Huddersfield Town will always be my true love, I have more than developed a soft spot for Mansfield Town.

“Writing this book and discovering the proud past of this famous club and the many cup shocks of the 1960's and 1970's, the successful promotion campaigns and the tales of club legends such as Sandy Pate, Phil Stant and kevin Bird has been a real honour.

“Any project such as this needs support from a number of people, and I have been more than fortunate to have had excellent support from many.

“Thanks go to Ashley Booker and Tim Morriss for their football knowledge and proof-reading skills, while a special thank you must go to Chad editor Tracy Powell for once again giving me this wonderful opportunity to make my dreams come true”
