Stags produced a heroic display at the JJB stadium. After starting well in the opening 10 minutes, Stags were then under the cosh for 10 minutes before the game turned on 24 minutes. Scott Sellars was sent off for violent conduct. Manager Watkiss was so incensed that he was sent from the dugout to the stand. From the resulting free-kick, which was advanced 10 yards, Wigan took the lead through Ellington. Ellington scored again on 32 minutes. It seemed like game over. But Stags pulled a goal back in the sixth minute of first half injury time through Colin Larkin. Amazingly Larkin scored again on 54 minutes to make it 2-2. But it couldn't last, and just after the influential Mackenzie went off injured, Wigan scored the winner on 65, with a free header from a corner. Stags were under pressure from then on, though Larkin nearly completed his hat-trick with a shot one yard wide. Stags left the field to a standing ovation, but still came away with no points.
