Lawrence seals Potters deal

Midfielder Liam Lawrence has completed a permanent move to Championship side Stoke City.

The Black Cats will receive an initial £500,000 fee for the 24-year old, which is set to rise to a possible £650,000 on player and team performance. He originally joined the Potters on a short-term loan in November last year.

Lawrence joined Sunderland from Mansfield Town in the summer of 2004 for £175,000, which rose to £325,000 on appearances and the club's promotion to the Premiership in 2005.

Liam Lawrence has become the third Sunderland player to leave the club today, after he agreed a £500,000 move to Stoke City.
Lawrence, 24, joins Stoke after a successful loan spell there that started in November, coming just days after rumours of a training ground bust-up with Roy Keane.

Sunderland will get half a million pounds from the Potters originally, a fee that will rise to £650,000 based on appearances and various other factors - although Mansfield Town will get £125,000 of the original fee, and 25% of any extra funds, as per the rulings of the Football League tribunal after we'd signed Lawrence in the summer of 2004.

Lawrence, who has signed a contract at Stoke until the summer of 2010, said: "I'm delighted it's all done and dusted now and I can finally look forward to being a Stoke player.

"It began as a loan move where I could play some football and show what I can do. I'm really enjoying it and the team is doing really well so to sign for good is the icing on the cake. The lads have been fantastic to me and that helped me settle in quickly, they're a good bunch and I was told that before I came here. This club has everything in place to get promoted. I think second place is still up for grabs and I wouldn't be joining unless I thought otherwise."

During his time on loan at Stoke, Lawrence made eight appearances, scoring two goals - something that followed in the same vein as his Sunderland form, as he'd scored ten goals from 80 appearances in just over two years on Wearside.

CURLE: SQUAD IS STRONG ENOUGH

MARK ROACH FINDS STAGS WON'T SPLASH WINDFALL
Keith Curle says he is happy to stick with his 18-man squad for the time being.
The Stags are thought to have collected a £20,000 fee after Lee Williamson's move to Northampton last week, and will receive an initial down payment of £175,000 from Sunderland for Liam Lawrence.
Mansfield will get £10,000 for every ten appearances Lawrence makes for the Black Cats up to 50, £100,000 on promotion, £50,000 on his first competitive international appearance and a 25% sell on fee, a ruling that satisfied Stags chairman Keith Haslam.
"The committee came to what I consider to be a fair decision and we have been compensated for Liam's development rather than just for his transfer value," said Haslam.
