STAGS' captain Richie Barker has given Mansfield Town the perfect boost just a few hours before the season's big kick-off.

The talisman striker revealed today that he has signed an extension to his current contract, which had been due to expire at the end of the season.

Last season's 23-goal top scorer had revealed in Chad earlier in the week that he wanted to secure his future before Saturday's opening match at Shrewsbury.

Tonight he said: "I signed at lunchtime and am very happy. It is what I wanted all along.

"This has been dragging on for the last few months and I am glad it is over and done with. Now I can concentrate on the football.

"Hopefully it will give me, the team and the fans a boost. Now we can get on with what we need to do, getting results on the pitch."
