RETAINED LIST ON THURSDAY AFTERNOON
New offers and retention list to be finalised this week
With the season now finished Stags' boss Peter Shirtliff can concentrate on the office work associated with the role of Team Manager.
He has busied himself talking to the players regarding new contracts and most of the players he would like to keep at the club has been informed verbally with the remaining few to be told when they report in for fitness testing on Thursday afternoon.
"I have more or less made offered to the players that I would like to stay at the club so hopefully by the end of this week we will know who will accept the offers and who won't.
"This is a new experience for me telling players that I want them to stay or that they no longer fit in with my plans. I have experienced a little bit though as an assistant manager but the talks with the chairman regarding what to offer people and contracts I can give out Is new to me." Shirtliff told the official website this morning.
One of the players that Shirtliff does want to keep at the club is Simon Brown.
"Simon is not out of contract as some people believe, he still has a year to run but we want him to sign for a further period which would mean him signing a two year deal. I think that we can do something about this week." He said.
A full retained list will be issued on Thursday afternoon when all the players have been informed of their fate.
(comment from Martin: it was reported in Dec 2004 that Brown had "signed an initial eighteen month contract with a one year extension", see here: http://www.stagsnet.net/news/newsdetails.php?newsid=2142)
