Shirtliff slams defending
STAGS boss Peter Shirtliff has ordered his side to tighten up defensively or face the axe.
Saturday's 2-2 draw at Wycombe saw Mansfield surrender a two-goal lead to slip closer to the relegation zone and Shirtliff said; "We concede too many goals - that's the bottom line.
"That is why we are where we are and if it doesn't improve I will have to do something about it.
"We were in a strong position at 2-0 up and I was particularly disappointed by the type of goals we conceded.
"Our defending was poor, particularly down the right hand side."
He added: "Once we had settled down and got the first goal we started to play with a bit of confidence, even more so after the second goal.
"So half-time came at a bad time for us. We were on top and looked like scoring more.
"I told them at half-time that Wycombe would come out firing which they did and we didn't deal with it at all.
"Maybe one or two of our players are young and naive. I don't know but we were found wanting."
Stags face League Two leaders Grimsby Town at home on Tuesday night (7.45pm).

Speaking with Radio Nottingham after the match, Stags boss Peter Shirtliff said "It was a shame we conceded the type of goals that we did, I'm disappointed in the type of goals we conceded, I thought it was poor defending, particular on our right hand side"

"Once we settled down and got the 1st goal, we looked to have started playing with a bit of confidence, obviously the 2nd goal goes in and we are buoyant, and half time comes at a bad time for us. We were on top and looking as though we were going to score more goals"

"I told them to expect Wycombe to come out firing, which they did and we didn't deal with it in all honesty."

"Stefan Oakes had way too much room and it was poor, poor defending"

"If someone had said to me before the game, would you take a point, I would have probably said yes, but I know what we are capable of, if we do the basics right, we are capable of winning games."

Wycombe assistant boss Steve Brown told wwfc.com. "I was pleased with our second half performance as I was disappointed with our first half show. Once more we have rallied to climb off the canvas and collect a point after it looked as if the game was over at half time.

"Bringing Sergio Torres on at the start of the half changed the pattern of the team and we put more pressure on the Mansfield goal that finally brought us dividend.

"With a bit more luck we could have snatched all three points but for two very good saves from Pressman. It was important we did not lose today and we have maintained our top three position so credit to the players for their efforts."
