STAGS CRASH OUT OF MIDLAND YOUTH CUP
MANSFIELD TOWN 0 - 6 SHREWSBURY TOWN
MIDLAND YOUTH CUP QUARTER FINAL
TUESDAY 30th NOVEMBER 2004
Report by Gordon Cleugh at Field Mill
This match was as one sided as the match in the previous round against Nuneaton Borough with Stags being on the receiving side of a 6-0 thrashing.
Shrewsbury took the lead after 13 minutes when a corner was easily headed home. The 2nd came from a corner on the same side in the 18th minute. Stags had 3 or 4 chances to clear the ball and cleared off the line but the ball eventually found a Shrewsbury player 10 yards out whose shot found its way through the players into the net.
It took Shrewsbury another 45 minutes to add to their lead. The 3rd goal came from a free kick out near the touchline a few yards into Stags half. A long cross found its way into the box and evaded all the players and found its way just inside the far post with maybe a touch by someone. A good run down the right led to the 4th goal in the 71st minute.
The 5th on 79 minutes came from a low cross into the area from the right which found a Shrewsbury player unmarked at the far side of the area who scored with a diving header. The final goal game in the 88th minute following a fine run down the right and a cracking shot.
Stags best chance was still to come when Heron's shot in stoppage time flew just over the crossbar.
